The sci-fi TV thread

Very cool article about that fight scene.

Worse, I think that

Ed is somehow going to make the decision that kills her.

They’re going to fuck up their counterfeit burn profile and the asteroid is going wind up in the crater.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Or vice versa, Kelly will survive but Ed’s shaky hand drops the asteroid on the main colony at Happy Valley, killing everyone including his grandson.

Whichever would be the bigger gut-punch for Ed, I think I’m rooting for that.

What does a galaxy far, far away have to do with a tiny midlands town in England?

The reason why is a crazy story.

They’ve made it front and center that

Summary

Ed wants to stay on Mars, and Alex HAS to stay on Mars. The math there of taking out Kelly is simple. But I hadn’t considered Ed causing it, which would be an outstanding narrative bookend to him piloting her rescue in S3.

Regardless, S4’s main flaw so far is giving Ed a different motivation every week for the same actions, when all I come away with is “fuck off forever, Ed”

Hadn’t factored in Alex’ health situation - good call. That Alex was so concerned about Kelly going off to the crater seemed a little heavy-handed at the time, but now looks like heavy-handed foreshadowing.

So, compliments of a visit by my friend ‘Rona, i’ve been able to binge watch all four seasons of FaM. I’ve enjoyed it. The production quality is typically high for Apple+ productions and the acting is good. I was a little put off at first, how they would jump forward periodically a few months at a time during the season and then sometimes 5 to 7 years between seasons but now I have come to enjoy that aspect of the show. I like the little news-based historical vignettes they do at the start of each season so that you can get a mental historical timeline context in your mind.

Regarding the last two episodes, Ed is indeed a douche.

Summary

…but I had mad respect for him, sending his grandkid through the air duct to get the part out of the sealed room. It reminds me of sending my five-year-old daughter up over a transom window to unlock a secure door at work one time. Ha. The only other noteworthy commentary I have on Ed is I hope he shaves that beard after his grandkid told him he looked like a scary bear. It’s been painful to see the actor talk in way that he does not mess up the fake beard for the season.

I thought for sure that would end up FUBAR and they did a good job of making you think it had.

If they ever make the long-promised tv/movie version of the Hyperion cantos…buckle up! Those books have time jumps from the end of one to the beginning of the next spanning centuries. You’re dropped into the new era sans preamble and you learn where you are and what you’ve “missed” as the story progresses.

Genius writing, but jarring nonetheless.

Since the rumored shift from TV to big screen, I have become a lot less excited about this. Hyperion would make for a great high-concept TV series on a service like Apple TV+ where it could have a big budget and not too much concern about getting canceled. Hyperion simply has too much material to cram into a cinematic movie. Movies also have to make money, and probably the only way to have a high-concept sci-fi movie that generates enough box office revenue is to have a Christopher Nolan type at the helm. Otherwise it will inevitably just get dumbed down for broadest appeal.

Yeah. Developments like “the Volume” should make a TV series of the Cantos much more doable, and much more accessible to an audience. The old adage that few will watch a 10-hour movie but tons of people will binge through 10, 1-hour episodes seems like it would apply here.

It would be a big risk in movie form given the outlay to launch a movie franchise, and the fact that the first book ends in a colossal dick-punch of a cliff-hanger. When I saw FOTR at the theater, people booed at the end. I presume it was due to the lack of resolution to the tale, rather than them having sat through a 3-hour movie they didn’t like.

Sergei and Margo were/are DUMB.

I just hope Aleida isn’t an unwitting victim. Since Sergei is gone she’s the only emotional tie for the KGB to hold over Margo.

But most of all fuck Ed and Dev. The writers could make Ed have a ‘what have I wrought?’ moment but I bet they give him the blaze of glory exit and let him save the day. Dev can get a face full of asteroid.

Ed basically told Kelly he’s going out in a blaze of glory.

S2 was Gordo and Tracy, S3 was Karen… not a stretch to think S4 is Ed’s farewell.
