The sci-fi TV thread

Bingo.

Also, the tensions between Russia and the U.S. over the asteroid mirror the tension between Ilya and Miles over the Mars rocks.

And in both cases, the US side is playing checkers against chess.

For all of Ed’s faults - and they are legion - he understands what he’s dealing with in the Russians.

I disagree but whatevs …

I haven’t actually seen it yet just reporting what people have said about it. Ironically Godzilla isn’t as popular in Korea as one might think so I don’t know if we’ll get it in theaters.

Matt it is more about Japan than Godzilla and is maudlin regarding WWII, therefore setting up as insufferable with many Koreans I know.

I was mostly being sarcastic with humorous visions of Koreans cheering for Godzilla in a crowded theater. Despite their historical difference, many Japanese pop culture vehicles are extremely loved and popular here. Most Millennials and Generation Z can separate the people from their awful government. Kaiju and disaster movies in general don’t seem to latch on here.

Ok so now I’m caught up. And I didn’t realize that the time travel comment above was directly related to Discovery but oh wow.

I’m not sorry I watched it. But …

Spoilers

Some major plot points felt like they were made up by 8 year olds playing with action figures.

‘Michael is human but also Vulcan and she’s Spock’s sister and she’s super super close to Spock but she has to fly into the future dressed as an angel to save all life and when she leaves Discovery follows her and everyone promises not to talk about her again because that was mess up the original series I mean the timeline and that’s why Spock and Sarek never mention her. Ever. The second most important woman in their lives. Even with all the mind melds they perform later.’

More seriously, the writers compulsion to resurrect dead characters borders on pathologic.

Less seriously, the amount of dialogging these chuckleheads do as chaos is erupting around them is astounding. Time sensitive things are in motion and I need to take you aside and emote about all this while strings play in the background.

And whoever put the impact-activated ceiling sparklers and fire puffs in the ventilation ducts on the bridge probably worked on the Death Star’s ventilation shaft design team.

And now seriously again, maybe most seriously, Michael is a terrible officer. She has been in every season. Mon Mothma was correct to question her. She keeps sinking half court shots and convincing herself she can’t miss. It’s awful writing because the character has tremendous potential and the actor really is outstanding.

But for all its faults I’m not sorry to have watched it. You guys warned me well enough so I tempered my expectations and did enjoy quite a bit of it.

To be fair, the show went through a total of five showrunners (Fuller, Berg/Harberts, Kurtzman/Paradise) in preproduction and the first two seasons, including a change during production of S2. So I think a lot of things you didn’t like about the ending of S2 were the result of them having to unfuck themselves in various ways without doing a ton of rewrites and reshoots. It is what it is, and TNG and DS9 are other examples of what can happen when a show lacks strong leadership early in its run. Kurtzman and Paradise brought stability to the show, but that also coincides with the rise of all of the things we really haven’t liked, especially the insufferable dialogue.

And yes, the show really really wants you to believe that Burnham (and Saru, for that matter) are/were good captains when they clearly are not. They released a clip from a S5 episode a few months ago that showed Burnham in a flight suit pursuing a ship at warp speed so she can board it alone, with the Discovery in pursuit. What the fuck is she doing out there by herself instead of on the bridge of her ship? The writers seem content to ride off into the sunset with Burnham holding onto her savior complex. I hope they realize how lucky they are that they got five seasons of Sonequa Martin-Green, because in the hands of a lesser actor Burnham would be a complete laughingstock.

I kept expecting Toro to burst through the doors.

This season of FAM has been pretty darn good.

Yes, and either Daniel Stern has improved or I’ve simply come around on him. The last couple of episodes I’ve found him completely believable in stressful situations.

I thought he was gonna have a heart attack on the exercise bike.

This latest twist has the potential to become quite interesting. I hope the writers are up to the task.

That look on Ed’s face …

Yes!

Agreed on FAM.

I am a little concerned that Monarch is losing its way. Or maybe I’m too ignorant of the lore to weather setting up something big. I hope it’s the latter.

Not sci-fi, but Reacher is devolving into a parody of itself. Although the math lady is nice.

Doesn’t it start off that way?

It’s Deadpool for normies.

FAM S4E7-8:

Dev and Ed are losing what few redeeming values they’ve had. And I’m pretty sure

Kelly’s somehow not making it back from that crater.

Re: Spoiler

I too had that sinking feeling. Nearing the end of the season, so it’s time to tense up those abs for some gut punches.
