McCarthy just brought a bill to the floor to keep the government open, one which was DOA in the Senate as it slashed social spending in favor of funding a border wall. The Senate’s opinion is moot, however, as he couldn’t even get enough Republicans to vote for it to pass in the House.
The Seinfeld Shutdown is all-but inevitable at this point.
ETA: McCarthy’s bill went down 198-232. That’s Ryder Cup bad. Pretty sure the number of floor votes that Pelosi lost in her stints has Speaker was zero.
I’ve been calling my shithead Republican congressman’s offices this week and asking the staff how it’s going to affect them. (They’re essential workers so they have to show up, but they won’t get paid.)
I say damn that sucks, and then point out that Democratic representatives are finding ways to pay their staff, by giving year-end bonuses early and things like that.
Then I just twist the knife. “Y’all getting any help like that? So you can pay your rent and bills? Democratic staff is. Man, you work for the wrong guy. Wrong party! hahahaha! Don’t you guys have a union? Oh right, House leadership disallowed it. Well, here’s my formal request to my congressman: PAY YOUR STAFF! Please pass that long to him from a constituent. Thanks, I’ll call back Monday and see how y’all are doing. Woo Pig!”
