Texans 2023

Same here. The only reason I have DirecTV. Well…that, and my wife insists on it because she needs 47 fucking Hallmark Networks and the Murder Channel. To be fair, the Murder Channel may also be on Hulu. I haven’t checked.

For this one game, yes.

The big picture is that the Peacock numbers are self-reported. Nielsen can only track overall market share on the platforms, and viewership numbers are a closely-guarded secret. And they won’t give it up unless it’s part of a labor negotiation .

So you think they stuffed the box?

I still maintain that streaming is where all current TV viewing will be in the not-too-distant future, other than local news and Hee Haw reruns.

I realize for folks in Texas it’s a big issue but for me, not so much. I couldn’t see Rays/Lightning games anyway primarily because their RSN is Bally’s and my cable company didn’t carry them, nor did YouTube TV which I use for live TV. Interestingly, you can sign up to stream Bally’s independently of a cable provider. It’s $20/month which is a bit salty but if I were jonesing to watch the Rays/Lightning, I’d probably fork it over.

Ditto

I cut the cord 18 years ago and bought a $25 antenna and have watched all of the games in glorious HD since and without a subscription.

Except the ones on ESPN and Prime?

It seems clear that dedicated cord cutters will want to invest in the Hee Haw DVD set. I believe it is called the Collector’s Edition.

Sa-loot!

Impossible to tell. Also impossible for the content creator (the NFL) to know, since there’s no industry or government group to get the figures. TikTok has been caught stuffing the box in order to woo YouTube creators, so there is precedent.

Regardless, when the platform provider is also the Internet provider is also the cell phone provider is also the broadcaster, you can guarantee that watching the NFL (and everything else) will get more expensive, with more invasive ads, and more unwanted tie-ins. Basically we’re reinventing cable TV, but the creators will get even less, and the consumers will pay even more.

My point being that technology is not the real driver for this, it’s good old-fashioned monopolism. The technology is just a fig leaf.

Absolutely. OTA TV is expensive to maintain, and it takes up valuable spectrum that the cell phone providers want. We’ve been slowly selling off that spectrum for years, and that will continue until Hee Haw is only available with TNN+, which is only available if you pay $180/mo for Verizon, or you can get it a la carte for $18/mo .

I’m not shedding a tear for OTA TV, just pointing out we’re going to get even more fucked over unless we can articulate the problem and complain to our congress critters. Maybe a screed about subsidizing those libureal elites at MSNBC just to watch God’s Own Sport would move the needle? (Chip Roy is my rep).

Open to suggestions on what to do, besides fork over more $$$ and personal info (which is probably what me and everyone else who can afford it will end up doing).

Netflix has been accused of this from Day One.

You feeling ok Limey?

That entendre was begging to be doubled.

Philly and Pittsburgh are offering a strong argument that 14 playoff teams might be at least two too many.

Yeah, but without this format we wouldn’t have had Green Bay at Dallas.

It’s amazing to see the Eagles look this lost. I can’t think of a similar NFL collapse.
