Baker Mayfield released by the Panthers. I was wondering if the Texans would kick his tires, figuring he couldn’t be any worse than what they’re getting from Mills. Then I saw this in an ESPN article:
Mayfield ranks last in the NFL in Total QBR among qualified quarterbacks with a rating of 18.2. The next closest is Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills at 29.2.
That’s damning on two fronts.
Mayfield is absolutely an upgrade from Kyle Allen, and probably Mills too. The issue with the Texans though is they are not simply a QB away, or even a handful of players away. They need to significantly upgrade at every single position on the field, except maybe RB.
