Tarpon

Figured that would get your attention Neil.

Just got back from Port St Joe. 3 days, saw lots of tarpon but no dice. Still it was a fantastic trip.

We’ve already booked again for next year.

I’m gonna be fishing in Colorado next week. Telluride, Durango, Pagosa. Any tips? Neil?

Yes, fish. We fished the Rio Conejos at 10,000 feet last year. It was really beautiful, incredible fishing, and I had a tough time walking from the car to the stream.

the San Juan in New Mexico below Navajo Dam is mighty famous. It’s very close to Durango.

I hooked a smallish biggish tarpon once, about 60 pounds. It danced across the surface and stayed on my line for exactly 4 seconds, just long enough for me to think what the hell am I supposed to do now?

Honestly, I was kinda glad to lose it.

ETA: Ted Williams claimed 1000 tarpon. He probably did.

Don’t count on catching a tarpon.

If you do, take a picture.

The San Juan will likely be crowded but productive. There is a wade-only section and below that a wade or float. The fish see a ton of flies. Small flies/tippets big fish.

The Animas is another option in that area. Probably less crowded.

Heck, the headwaters of the Rio Grande is in that area.

If it were me I’d hire a guide. Let us know what you end up doing. The world is your rocky mountain oyster.
