The Astros have signed outfielder Parker Chavers and assigned him to Sugar Land. Chavers was a 7th round pick of the Cubs in 2021 out of Coastal Carolina. His bat hasn’t had the level of success expected in pro ball.
This is notable in our house because he went 7-7 against my son’s High School team back in 2017. So we have been following him for a while.
I wonder how that SS with the crazy stance has performed since being drafted? At the time he was projected to go in the first three rounds.
I followed Coastal Carolina for a bit as we went on a college visit there with my daughter. At the time she was thinking about baseball analytics as a career and possibly had an opportunity to be part of that program. She had provided analytical information to the baseball coaching staff at our HS all 4 years. Anyhow, we got to meet the HC (then Gilmore) and the head of their analytics department and also got to peak behind the curtain a bit regarding all they were doing. This was about 4 years ago and it was eye opening. I was blown away. So was she. Very cool stuff. I’m sure it’s only gotten more complicated since then.
Eric Brown, the one with the super upright stance? He went first round to the Brewers in 2022 but has crashed and burned. Was a big-time data darling with a good eye and good exit velocities (classic Brewers pick). Unfortunately those skills didn’t actually include the ability to hit pro pitching, and he’s been stuck in AA for a while consistently hitting below the Mendoza line.
Yeah…I think that’s him. 2022 fits time line of our visit too. But there you go…guess he hasn’t played to well.
By the way…the stadium there in Conway is a great place to take in a ballgame if you’re ever in the neighborhood.

Astros aquire former Aggie indfielder Braden Shewmake from the Yankees for RHP Wilmy Sanchez
Shewmake was a former 1st round pick of the Braves in 2019. He has had cups of coffee with the Braves (2 games 2023) and White Sox (29 games 2024). Only played in 85 games at AAA last year. In the minors, most of his starts are at SS (334), followed by 2B (88) and 3B (10). He also pitched in one game. He has hit .241/.305/.384 across 7 seasons at AAA.
Sanchez (22) was at Corpus Christi and was off to a good start out of the pen there. Last year, he had 51 BB and 75 Ks in 61 IP at CC.
Seems like cutting down on the number of available pitchers might be imprudent.
