Mary did not “gift” Johnny a book. Mary gave Johnny a book.
The verb is “to give”. Give, gave, given.
One gives a gift. One does not gift a gift. That’s stupid. “Gift” is a fucking noun.
Just stop it.

“Mary did you know?”
Of COURSE she knew. The angel told her all about it!
In spanish, a gift is un regalo, to give a gift is regalar. I suspect that the creeping verb “to gift” is just more evidence that President Trump’s wall wasn’t finished in time to prevent the downfall of Murica.
ETA: The OED reports the first recorded use of “gift” as a verb is from before 1600, while the first use as a noun is from the 1100s, so you’re right to think “to gift” is a new-fangled usage. I would guess that the most common use of “to gift” is in large charitable giving, so that it’s pretty common to hear that Mr. Texifornia gifted $8 million to the Texas Tech football program. Good job Texifornia!
The denominalization of our language must stop. Make America Anthimeria Free Again!
I’m going to gift one of those to my kids for Christmas.
