Science & Engineering Shit

I have these at my place and had no idea they were rare:

“Not considered edible.” You’d think that would be a yes-or-no question.

More target practice for US fighter pilots…

USAF 3, Balloons/Objects 0

And now there are reports that the FAA has shut down some of the airspace over Montana due to DoD activity.

ETA:

Seems like, given recent events, it would be detected before it got to Montana. Or, maybe it was launched from Idaho.

Washington. Fucking Commies.

I think it means that eating it wont kill you but it does taste like rotten turds.

I’m dying to see the kill marking for these. I’d be torn between the WWF Panda and the hot air balloon emoji.

If anyone wants to get their inorganic chemistry nerd on…

Lots of efforts around carbon capture and sequestration these days, and direct air capture has long been a bit of a white whale. Technologies exist, but they are inefficient and energy intensive, mostly due to the relatively low concentration of atmospheric CO2. This promising nugget uses a copper cation-based polymer sorbent to capture the CO2 at a much higher rate than traditional methods. The sorbent is then regenerated using sea water at ambient temperature and the CO2 is sequestered as NaHCO3…sodium bicarbonate…baking soda. In other words…using the ocean as a sink to pull CO2 out of the atmosphere. And no one has to buy a Tesla.

It will be great if carbon capture becomes a reality. I do worry, though, that it’s just a head fake by “Big Oil” to get us to stop worrying about burning fossil fuels.

Just like carbon footprint was a head fake by “Big Oil” to get us to blame ourselves for climate change…

They’re pumping a trillion (that’s “illion” with a capital T) dollars into it, so if it’s a head fake, it’s an awfully expensive one.

ETA: And that video, while perhaps entertainingly regurgitates a tired old trope, is wildly inaccurate and misleading. It’s not far off of “stop the steal” in terms of legitimate argument.

I drove up to a friend’s farm in Illinois outside of St Louis for the 2017 eclipse. It was spectacular. This next one will be in my backyard.

Not sure where else this would go…

Why is it that every pilot in TV/movies can also fly a helicopter? Aren’t they completely unrelated types of flying?
