There was no play at the plate. With any other team, a slide is more dangerous than running through a bag.

What you don’t do is run across home plate at full speed, especially if you have gimpy legs and weigh 250 lbs

I have never seen anyone slip on home plate at any level, ever.
Maybe I’ve lived a sheltered existence.

No point in second guessing slides or no slides. This is simply just the 2025 Astros season. It’s beyond an explanation at this point.

A few years ago some guy hit a walk-off homer, circled the bases, hopped on home plate, slipped, and tore up his ACL.

It happened to me once.

iirc it basically ended Kendry Morales’s career. Except he did it while jumping into the gang at HP after a walk-off grand slam. Talk about weird injuries.

I’ve seen it happen at lower levels. In the pouring rain when your spikes are packed with clay and the plate wet.
Just saw the video. Yeah, he’s done for at least 10 months. I’ll be surprised if he plays in 2026. Also, don’t lunge for a base. Chop your feet if you’re not gonna slide. That’s Baserunning 101.
Just curious as to why home plate is slick and all the other bases are textured. Tradition or some other reason?
It’s not slick, it’s the same material as the other bases, it’s just not raised. The reasons it’s not raised are because 1) to not interfere with the batter, and 2) because in the design it was assumed that’s where players would slide, and it would be safer. Baseball has changed a lot since its inception.
Every diamond I’ve ever been on has had a home plate of some sort of rubber/plastic material that’s definitely different from the other bases.

All the bases, including home plate, are rubber. The other bases are raised and filled, home plate is flat. Bases used to be made of canvas, but they’ve been rubber for over 60 years now.
But the bases are filled with some kind of foam or cushion type material, right? Not solid rubber but rather a rubber “shell”?
Yes, the bases are raised and filled with soft material to give it that cushion. They used to be canvas filled with sawdust. Home plate is also constructed to give a little and have “bounce”, but it’s obviously not as soft as the bags. MLB home plates are obviously well maintained and are level with the surrounding dirt surface, but we all probably remember less manicured fields where the dirt around the plate had been washed away, and the plate stuck up an inch or two. Brutal.
But isn’t home plate smooth where as the other bases have a pattern on them. Why not engrave a pattern into home?
I wonder if it is just to keep it cleaner for the umps so the can brush it off easier.
