I’ll always remember that time him and Larry Dierker dueled it out for 12 innings of shutout pitching. Of course the Astros lost but it was one of the best pitched games I ever listened to. With brother Joe, the Neikros won more games than any other brother combo.
A book about the early years of the team says the Astros traded for Phil Niekro, but he vetoed the trade. My recollection is if he had accepted the trade, the rotation would have been Richard, Ryan, Niekro, J., and Niekro, P.
