When I was a kid, you know what the thermostat was? It was me. “Open that window”. “Close that window”. “Turn that fan down”. I was subject to whims, but it wasn’t Google’s.
I have Nest in one place and Ecobee in the other. Agree with the Ecobees. I prefer them. Ecobee is also easier connecting to legacy (old) HVAC systems as well.
I had a Nest at the old place in Freestone County. I hooked it up myself to a simple old HVAC system, and it was easy peasy. Just a couple of wires. I really liked the Nest, so if the Ecobee is even better, it must make you breakfast in the morning.
How much more red can it be? The answer is none. None more red
Just for fun, I asked it to “play Tycho” as I walked by one time and, sure enough, it (and the one on the floor below) started playing Tycho.
I don’t know what Tycho is, but will it play Willie Nelson?
I’ve had ostrich and various types of bok (similar to deer) while in South Africa. All were delicious. I also ate kangaroo a few times during my time in Aussie. Bit gamier and just as lean, but still tasty.
Back when in Houston, I made it a point to eat every variety of burger they had at Ziggy’s Healthy Grill…was my one experience with kangaroo
If anyone’s ever interested, check out Broken Arrow Ranch and their wild game offerings. I can personally vouch for the owners and operators. A nilgai burger topped with feta is quite delicious.

Services recommendation request: I’ve got a room with messed up drywall that needs re-texturing and painting, plus a couple of patches where some electrical work got done. I’m in central Houston. Anyone got a painter they can recommend?
Update: found one. I highly recommend Brady Painting Contractors. Fast, professional, excellent work.
Anyone subscribe to a meal prep delivery service?
I live alone and don’t eat particularly well despite - or perhaps because - I’m a vegetarian. Fresh produce I buy tends to go bad before I get around to cooking it and available frozen vegetables aren’t really meant for vegetarian cooking.
I have a plant-based service in mind - Purple Carrot - which I doubt is on anyone’s radar. I’m curious, though, whether anyone has used a meal service and what they thought.
Also, I’m thinking about getting an air fryer to go with the service. Thoughts on that as a replacement for pan frying (remembering that I’m not going to be needing to sear anything).
Cheers!
I used Hungry Root for a while (not a vegetarian). It was ok but overall the food was meh. I didn’t use it for all my meals, and I ended up liking my own meals better so I cancelled.
But I’m all in on air fryers, saves lots of time and cooks great, plus if you get a two sided one you can make, you guessed it, two different things at a time (for me, a chicken breast on one side, maybe corn on the cob on the other). Also used an InstaPot for a while. It was good, like a crock pot but faster. The problem for me was I had a large one (steady…) and it was tough to cook for one in it.
Thanks. I looked at Hungry Root, but their veggie meals looked “meh” to me too. Reviews say that Purple Carrot’s meals are big on flavor.
I’ve really wanted to go vegetarian for a while now, but, well, I don’t really care for most vegetables, at least in the forms that I’ve had them. It might be a good idea for me to look at something like Purple Carrot to see the variety of vegetarian meals available, to at least get started.
I ate a hot dog with chili for lunch, but I imagined that it was vegetarian because it wasn’t particularly good.
I had a peanut butter, banana, and honey sandwich on Dave’s Killer Bread for lunch today – along with orange carrot sticks and green celery sticks.
Years ago, Kara and I tried Blue Apron and Hello Fresh (the latter very briefly). Both were… adequate. The quality of ingredients wasn’t terrible but also not as good as what we could buy at our local supermarket. And the meals themselves got to be pretty repetitive, often just a riff on something would be best described as Gringo Asian.
I can see the appeal of these services for someone who’s single. In my experience, cooking for just yourself is one of the most unenthusiastic endeavors in life.

With a hot dog, you’re lucky if there’s any content that would be recognizable as meat.

Because it’s an awesome riff on Godley & Creme (for those of a certain age) and because it has this amazing and relevant stanza:
These aren’t tears of sadness because you’re leaving me
I’ve just been cutting onions
I’m making a lasagna (for one)

Actually, it was a Stewart and Gouldman composition.

peanut butter, banana, and honey sandwich
Peanut butter and honey is a very underrated combo. Give me pb&h over pb&j anytime.
When I was a kid, my grandmother was out of honey so she used syrup. It is a wonder I didn’t develop diabetes.
