Verstappen has been given 3 penalty points for deliberately driving into Russell. He now has to avoid any kind of incident in the next two races - after which some old penalty points drop off his record - otherwise he’ll receive a one race ban.

Now, Max can probably shoot someone in the middle of the pit lane and not get assessed a penalty that would mean he gets a race ban, but he still has to be on somewhat hinged behaviour. He’s dropped to 45 points behind championship leader Piastri, so he needs to pick up points every race and hope that the McLarens take each other out in a couple of races. A race ban with no points could well leave him unable to catch either McLaren driver.

If you’re missing out on English sport in the absence of the EPL…

The finals are set in the WCWS. It will be Texas Tech vs. Texas.

Tech’s significant NIL commitment along with a new head coach and a mostly new team has paid off in the program’s first WCWS. Raider Nation is thrilled after the most dismal baseball season in recent memory. Texas is a perennial softball power which has yet to win the championship.

The best of three series starts Wednesday.

Man City’s place in the UCL is considered sacrosanct despite them facing eleventy charges of cheating spanning almost a decade. A decade during which they were the dominant team in England.

Palace qualified for Europe once before - in 1991 - and UEFA pretzeled itself to take away our shot. It’s hard not to feel paranoid.

Fun Fact #1: For the 24/25 season, both Manchester clubs were allowed to compete in European competitions despite both having common ownership with another team in their respective competitions.

Fun Fact #2: If Palace are deemed bootable from the Europa for not being “Manchester Something”, we would by rule be demoted to the Europa Conference. But Textor owns a team - Brondby - that has already qualified for the Conference so we would be excluded from that too.

Fun Fact #3: Because an adverse ruling against Palace would see us booted from Europe completely, it would open up a slot for another English club. Nottingham Forest, who finished 7th and took the last Europa Conference slot, would be promoted to the Europa proper. Forest’s Conference spot would pass to the team in 8th, being…fucking Brighton.

Verstappen guilty-as-fuck of deliberately driving into Russell at the Spanish GP. How this did not result in a more severe penalty is beyond me.

The on-board analysis is damning. We’re seeing just this one time through the corner, but the stewards would have access to every time Max when through Turn 5, and can compare his throttle, brake and steering each time - which I bet was like clockwork and very different to what he did when he hit Russell.

Regardless of al, of that, the overhead shot at the end of this vid shows everything.

3 to 3 in OT of game one of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Per OptaStats:

“Leon Draisaitl of the @EdmontonOilers has scored an OT goal in 7 different months in the 2024-25 season, including playoffs (Oct, Nov, Dec, Mar, Apr, May, Jun). No one else in NHL history has scored an OT goal in more than 4 different months in a single season (reg & post).”

That game last night was pretty fun.

By the end of the OT both teams looked exhausted.

Florida blinked first and flubbed an attempt to clear the puck and sent it out of play for a delay of game penalty. Edmonton cashed in.

I don’t know how the UEFA Nations League works or why it even exists, but the final on Sunday has some spice to it, being Portugal vs. Spain.

The respective semi-finals were an absolute hoot.

Speaking of finals that were a hoot…

I only got to see the first half of Spain-France, but there sure was a lot action.

Texas won game one of the Women’s College World Series yesterday 2-1. Today, Texas Tech won 4-3. Tomorrow, the two former SWC and Big XII foes will play for the National Championship, a first for either program.

In winter, Florida’s population is comprised of one-third of the state of Ohio, or so it seems.

A few random, mixed-bag comments.

Limey, absolutely thrilled for you and your nephews and CP. Simply amazing.

When we lived in Lincolnshire for half a year, my husband temporarily adopted, erm, City as his team, and two of the young lads who worked at the manor where we lived are born-and-raised Forest fans. I’ll add that while he and I have grown to enjoy watching football, we do not know the history of the teams well, and it is entirely probable that his selection may have been through Masonic-flavored or Ted Lasso-colored lenses.

One of my best friends is visiting Paris now-- she’s been there just over a week. She stayed in the Trocadero area of Paris and had a wonderful time being outside in the evening that PSG won-- until she was half-trampled in a running riot. She’s slightly banged up, but mostly okay-- she bought bandages printed in the bleu, blanc, rouge and made the best of it.

My entire household is not surprised at the result of the Dallas-Edmonton series, nor were we pleased with several of DeBoer’s… choices in the final game and the immediate aftermath. Frankly, now that I don’t have a dog in the fight, I’m half-hoping for a bloody championship series. Kill! Kill! Kiiiiillll! (she said, while polishing shovels and rakes and other implements of de-struc-tion.)

And one morning, weeks after the NCAA men’s basketball championship was over, I awoke to a pretty cool Facebook notification. Did I fangirl when I saw it? Yes. Yes, I did, in fact, fangirl.

So, yeah, I can’t see any way that they don’t kick us out of Europe.

It’s the perfect scenario for UEFA:

  • They get to punish a Premier League team to set an example of how not corrupt they are;
  • They don’t hurt the tournament ratings; and
  • They don’t piss of the people who provide their off-the-books income streams.

I actually agree with the rule in principle, but neither of the “conflicted” Palace owners has a controlling stake and they have used that justification to let this rule slide so often it should have an honorary Winter Olympics gold medal.

Light the tower!

Horns win the WCWS, beating Texas Tech 10-3!

I can’t believe this is their first softball title

Twenty years ago, even fifteen years ago, softball was predominantly a West Coast game. The rivalry between Arizona and UCLA, who were the giants and set the standard for everyone else, was incredible. Obviously, so much has changed over n the last ten years. What Oklahoma did in their run of straight titles is incredible. And I say that as someone who does not like the state north of the Red River.

That was fairly ragged defense for the final 3 innings but boy did they jump on Tech early.
