Other Sports

Today is one of my favorite non-baseball sporting events: the 151st Running of the Kentucky Derby.

It’s a beautiful day today in Houston, that storm yesterday bringing in the last cool front of the year. I shall dress in my Derby finery, complete with the appropriate headwear, eat an egg salad sandwich, and drink bourbon cocktails. Mrs. Hawk has informed me that she is wanting to drink boulevardiers today, rather than the traditional mint julep. An interesting, but still entirely appropriate twist.

My horse is Sandman. Not only is he a gorgeous gray roan, he’s the recent Arkansas Derby winner and a responsible bet, going off at 6-1. If he wins, I shall be blasting Metallica throughout the neighborhood.

Flying Mohawk has the best name so that’s who I’m rooting for. No idea which horse loves the slop (father was a mudder, mother was a mudder), so I have no educated guess on who will actually win.

Apparently Journalism is the favorite but I have no faith in Journalism these days

My status as a Palace fan means I can buy a ticket in Phase 2 of availability (Phase 1 being season ticket holders). I am pretty hopeful of getting a ticket.

Here’s what I am looking forward to:

Jean-Philippe Mateta is a different kind of cat.

If he wins, there’s a non-zero chance Trump issues an executive order nullifying it.

There should be a horse called Fake News.

I saw this:

The 2024-25 Emirates FA Cup Final between Crystal Palace and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium connected by EE will kick-off at 4.30pm BST on Saturday 17 May.

The kick-off time has been agreed in collaboration with the competing clubs, broadcasters, local authorities, police, and the Safety Advisory Group.

I guess the local police have to ensure they have enough space in the pokey

That’s later than the 3pm traditional kick-off time, which allows for more pre-gaming. Can’t see any negative consequences from that.

An extra hour and a half to get tuned up. What could possibly go wrong?

There’s a reason the Texas-OU game has a traditional 11AM kickoff

And his colors have a star. Good pick.

And it’s Sovereignty. Journalism the runner-up.

The Stars trailed the Avs 2-0 in the 3rd period but rallied to score 4 goals (one empty netter) to win the game and the series 4-3.

This comes after they finished the regular season losing 8 straight.

Playoff hockey is nutso.

Oof!

The player that scored the hat trick against them in game 7 was traded to Dallas by … Colorado.

The Blues and Jets in a game 7 tonight.

Not exactly. The Avs traded him to Carolina, who then figured out he wouldn’t re-sign there, so Carolina sent him to Dallas.

Details schmetails

Yes, the only reason I’m posting this is so I can make that shitty joke.
