Damn, dude
Iām wondering about soccer players.
I had two concussions playing rugby (amongst an assortment of other injuries), one of them far more serious than the other where I was knocked completely unconcious and had to be taken off the pitch.
From what Iāve read, the research suggests that the cumulative effect of frequent lower intensity hits to the head may be as serious as multiple concussions similar to the one I experienced. That doesnāt bode well for sports like rugby and soccer.
Soccer players frequently suffer near-fatal injuries, sometimes multiple times a game, but then recover miraculously moments later.
Exhibit A:
Seriously, though, there is a study that heading the ball - especially for younger kids - can be damaging to the brain. As for adults, Iām not sure the impact of a ball is enough to scramble someones brains and, with most of them, how would you know?
I used to play on the back line, and I hated seeing goal kicks (and especially goalkeeper punts) coming my way. Best case, the ball was going to hurt. Worst case, the ball was going to hurt and you were going to knock heads with somebody else.
And then there was the time some loon came flying through the box with a high bicycle kick and caught me flush in the face. One moment I saw a boot coming at me, and the next moment I was sitting on the sideline wondering what was going on. For me, there was no time elapsed in between; for everybody else, there was about 10 minutes.
Sunday morning, freezing cold, raging hangover, and one of these is coming down at you from orbitā¦
And the ball is soaking wet.
Which means itās a few pounds heavier.
Thatās a bludger.
When I was a Senior in HS, playing left tackle on the offensive line, an opposing 300+ lb defensive end got tired of me cut blocking him on running plays and decided to show his disgust by grabbing the back of my helmet and kneeing me as hard as possible right in my helmetās ear hole. I played the rest of the game, but have almost zero recollection of it.
The lights came back on when I was in the trainerās room getting the tape cut off my ankles and asked Doc āDid we win?ā.
More than that. Itās a motherbludger.
Princeās SB halftime show will never be topped.
The Eaglesā Smith is the skinniest dude Iāve seen on a football field since Nigel Gruff.
Philly canāt stop the run. Itās gonna get ugly for them.
Or the pass now, it seems.
Jesus
No way Chiefs would be allowed to lose this game.
KC got themself in position to get that call. I love seeing defensive backs from the NFL saying that wasnāt PI.
