News & Notes from the AL West

I’m sure there are some kind of scenarios where I might be forced to acknowledge an advantage in a Yankee win. But still, FUCK those guys.

Fuck them both.

I hope they play 16 inning each game.

This column paints an unflattering picture of the non-baseball side of the A’s organization:

They never should have left Philly, or KC.

Wow, Andrus broke his leg scoring yesterday - said he felt a pop in his ankle and was taken for x-rays after being carried off the field.

Glad they didn’t bother actually making a throw home.

And I sincerely hope he recovers with no long term effects.

He was obviously in pain. I assumed it was a pulled hammy.

He felt the pop rounding 3rd, I can’t believe he even made it home.

He staggered home.

Wow, Seattle caught Boston in the win column and controls their own destiny. Good for them. I much prefer them in the WC vs. The Red Sox.

They are behind in the loss column so they don’t actually control their own destiny. If the Red Sox win out and the Yankees win enough games the Mariners can’t get there

It’s the loss column that matters in controlling your own destinty, and Seattle is still a game behind there. They need Boston to lose again. They could concievably end up in a three way tie with Boston and Toronto, in which case a menage a trois would be required to settle the dust. They would host Toronto, but have to travel to Boston, and then travel to New York. So they could possibly have to play Monday in Boston, Tuesday in Seattle, then Wednesday in New York. That all assumes they don’t end up tied for the division with the Astros, in which case they would play Monday in Houston. The latter requires they win out from here and the Astros lose out. Lots to be settled in the next few days.

I thought that in a three-way tie, the team with the best record got to pick whether to host the first game (but have to play a second game if they win) or wait for a second game but travel to the home site of the winner of the first game. Or something like that.

You are the expert is this kind of stuff. So, I have a question; how does this work? Boston and seattle both have 88 wins. If they both win all their remaining games… ah, I just answered my own question. Ha.

If they’re tied, they all have the same record. The Mariners won the head to head against the BJs, but not against the Sox. The Sox won the head to head against both. So yes, they get assigned Teams A, B, and C, and my assumption is based on head to head, Boston would be Team A, Seattle Team B, and Toronto Team C. From there, I’m not sure how it plays out.

Glad to help.

Seriously though…that “half-game” thing can be kinda confusing. It represents teams having played a different number of games, and whether that extra game was a win or a loss for you or your opponent is a big thing. You can increase your win total, but you cannot shrink your loss total, hence the saying that it’s the loss column that matters. It’s not something most people pay attention to until this last week of the season.

Yrs, “better record” was a stupid thing go say since they all have the same record by definition. What I meant was “owns the three-way tie-breaker”.

But the choice of whether to be team A, B, or C in that case (three-way tie for second wild-card spot) is an interesting one.

If the Astros had the 1st seed ( still possible but unlikely) then I would love for as many of them as possible tie

Have them burn up their pitching in multiple elimination games before the Victor facing the Astros.

But as the #2 seed, I want the WC winner as strong as possible to eliminate TB in the ALDS.

Then, if they get there, the Astros can take on the WC winner in the ALCS.

Eliminating Bos, or NYY, or even Seattle would have a special level of satisfaction that I don’t feel from TB.

I think in this case it’s easy who is the “#1 seed”, if you will, because Boston has a better record against the other two. In the sense of a record, they are 2-0, Seattle is 1-1, and Toronto is 0-2. But if they were all 1-1 against each other…all hell probably breaks loose…dogs and cats, living together…

I thought those half games were Manfred’s seven inning bullshit.
