Hamlet’s a bad ass play.
Hamlet
MacBeth
Othello
King Lear
The Tempest
Richard III
Julius Caesar
You should also do the Henry’s, in order
I’m not as much a fan of his comedies, so someone else can recommend those.
Ahem!
Henry V, the Official Shakespeare Play of OWA
As for comedies, the Comedy of Errors is my favorite. Also Much Do About Nothing.
I mentioned the Henry’s
Also, Titus Andronicus is not one of his best, but it’s possibly his craziest
Not just any Henry…THE Henry. It’s Official.
But Henry IV has THE quote: “Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown”.
Oh I know, I’m waiting for Limey to post the speech.
Henry V has “though patience be a tired mare, yet she will plod.” I have to remember this numerous times during the Astros’ season.
That one is decidedly not a comedy.
The film version with Anthony Hopkins is…something
The comedies do better when seen rather than read.
This has been made into eleventy-one modern romcoms. See also Shrew, Taming of.
I would like to party with Falstaff.
Worst beer ever.
Obviously you’ve never had Griesedieck beer.
Much Ado has always been my favorite of his plays, for a variety of personal reasons. But the film version with Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Kate Beckinsale, Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves, and Michael Keaton is the best film adaptation of any Shakespeare play.
I really liked Much Ado (Keanu was miscast–accents aren’t his strong suit), but for me, Olivier’s Hamlet is the benchmark.
I know he’s on the shit list these days and a lot of his stuff hasn’t aged well, but I’ll stand by Joss Whedon’s version of Much Ado as a fun and worthy adaptation.
For me, it’s Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V. That’s the play/movie that got me interested in Shakespeare and not something to be endured reading in high school.
