It and Tuesday’s Gone are their best tracks (excluding that one that’s been overplayed to death)

I have a soft spot for “The Ballad of Curtis Loew”.

Good call.

“It Ain’t What You Do (It’s the Way That You Do It)”, Fun Boy Three and Bananarama

RIP Terry Hall.

The best Steve n Seagulls cover is of November Rain. And along those lines, I’ll add The Gourds doing Gin and Juice and this most excellent version of Boyz In The Hood

Yep, can’t believe I forgot The Gourds. Shineyribs is good and all, but man I miss that band.

There’s a whole nuther category of “cross-genre” cover songs, so to speak. Hillbilly versions, such as those by Hayseed Dixie, are always fun.

I submit these:
September Gurls - The Bangles
Stop Your Sobbing - The Pretenders
These Days - Nico
Good Vibrations - Todd Rundgren
Banana Splits (Tra La La Song) - The Dickies
Stagger Lee - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Satisfied Mind - Jeff Buckley
Wonderwall - Ryan Adams
If I Needed You - Emmylou Harris
Beyond the Sea - Bobby Darin
Pale Blue Eyes - R.E.M.

Julio Iglesias’ version (of La Mer) is outstanding, I’d never heard it until I saw Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

The Gourds got me thinking about Austin bands, and Brownout does some most excellent Sabbath covers. I also can’t recommend their live shows enough.

A few more I really like:
Maggie May - Blur
Wichita Lineman - Black Pumas
True Love Travels on a Gravel Road - Nick Lowe
Rain - Shonen Knife
Jumpin’ Jack Flash - Aretha Franklin

Ok, how the hell has none of us mentioned Buckley’s “Hallelujah”?

Because John Cale’s version is the definitive cover.

He also did a great cover of The Pixie’ “Cactus”.

Yeah, for some reason that version hits me a lot harder than the Pixies’ original.

While it’s certainly the most obvious choice, I think cover of Satisfied Mind is simply that much better.

Agreed. The Pixies’ version sounds a little bland in comparison.

Basically, Bowie was the best so, if he does your song, he’s going to do it better than you. Although Modern Lovers’ original of “Pablo Picasso” fares very well in comparison to Bowie’s cover.

As does…John Cale’s.
