Achtung Baby is one of my favorite albums of all time. Might be because John and I saw them twice on the Zoo TV tour (indoor and outdoor in Phoenix), and both shows were fucking incredible to 15 year old me.
My lasting impression of Achtung Baby (which I admittedly haven’t listened to in a long time) is that it must have been mixed by the bass player, because the bass is really in your face on many of the songs. But I love “One”.
And I disagree that “Smooth” sucks, but I’m a Santana freak and not entirely objective.
Same here, but in Houston. The indoor show was at the Summit (a great venue now defiled) and was absolutely the greatest concert experience I’ve ever had. Just amazing. The show in the Dome was…a show in the Dome.
Excellent list, although I would classify Old Time as overplayed, not sucks.
I need a ruling on whether John Lennon qualifies as a great individual artist to nominate Imagine.
It may be my single favorite song of all time.
Don’t remember where we saw the indoor concert. I want to say it was Tempe Normal’s basketball arena, but that doesn’t seem like a big enough venue.
The outdoor concert was at Tempe Normal’s Sun Devil Stadium. Mos Eisley is the only hive of scum and villainy that’s more wretched, but I will admit it is a great concert venue.
End of the World is still my favorite song on that album. One is really damn good, though.
I thought they were singing, “We Milked this Titty”?
The greatest concert experience anyone has ever had was 17 year old me going to a Billy Idol concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion with a 24 year old woman who was deeply, deeply appreciative that I brought her along as my date. Deeply appreciative.
Next you’re gonna tell me that Sussudio is a rockin good Phil Collins tune.
Actually it was a Journey concert, and I was 19 and she was 30, but still very appreciative. I gave 110% effort.

I have seen U2 more times than I can remember. The Zoo TV gig I saw was at Wembley Stadium, where they were supported by the Stereo MCs. That was a helluva day, considering we met up in central London at 10:30am…

Jefferson Airship: We Built This City
Point of Order: I believe they had become “Jefferson Starship” by this time.
That song is still one of the worst songs ever recorded.
I could never stand any song by Styx. Not one. I wouldn’t blame someone for murdering them just for “Mr. Roboto”

I love “One”
This was written by The Edge, and is about the breakup of his marriage.
If you think the band’s version is raw with emotion, there’s a version of The Edge performing it just with an acoustic guitar that will shred your heart. I’ll pop back here with it if I can find a link.

I could never stand any song by Styx. Not one.
I always liked Crystal Ball. It’s probably my favorite Styx song. And album, for that matter.

Your recollection is correct.
We saw the indoor show at Wells Fargo Arena where tempe normal school plays their precious little version of basketball.
The outdoor show was at Scum Devil Stadium.
We sat on the east side, down low not terribly far from the stage.
If you also recall, we got pulled over by DPS for speeding after hitting Carl’s Jr. on I-10. Got off with a warning.
Those were darn good shows.
The new Bono/Edge documentary on Apple TV with Dave Letterman is enjoyable, btw.
Watched it on my commute home the other night.
Will give it a look.
