The Astros released OF Luis Baez. Baez’s $1.3 million signing bonus was the largest of Houston’s 2022 international class and, in some publications, he rose as high as No. 2 in organizational rankings. Baez, 23, had a .440 OPS in Double-A this season after a .644 mark last year.
Wow. Two to three years ago, Baez was supposed to have the most raw power out of any prospect in the Astros’ system. Another reminder that Class A ball is littered with highly touted prospects who unfortunately never panned out.
I hope he invested his bonus wisely.
You and me both. That’s literally life changing money for a kid from the Dominican.
This is a huge caveat for relying on prospects who are very limited in the field or on the bsses.
Bat only prospects have such a narrower path.
Darryl Ward anyone?
A “bat only” prospect who hits like an old-school SS certainly does have a narrow path to the bigs.
eta: on the flipside, how bad can a “defense only” guy hit and still stay in the lineup?
Ahem, “Daryle” Ward.
That’s his other brother.
Xavier Neyens is moving up to high A
Anthony Huezo also being promoted to Asheville.
