While you to finalize things, I’ll state am unable to see a justification for such a unilateral action as allowing 1-3 teams to swap. It also opens the door for more as there will still be the same number of teams not taken.
ETA: and what if 2 teams wanted to swap out for the same team? Just more problems.
I have a question about managerial philosophy. Say you’ve got Cole on your roster. Do keep him as a keeper and chew up an IL spot for the entire year so that you’re guaranteed to have him next year (at an as-yet-unknown fraction of his previous self), or do you throw him back in the pool and let other people think about him? And if he’s available when your turn comes around, would you take him? I think I’d pass, just because there are no sure things (of course, I don’t have him now anyway, so I’m no worse off).
I can’t imagine the circumstances where the commissioners or a majority of managers would approve of allowing a sitting owner to take over a vacant team.
Part of that would be what the injury was, how long recovery would be, what the likelihood of complete recovery would be, and how the injury affects the player. In this case, I think it’s TJS on a pitcher’s elbow, and there is a decent amount of information regarding the timelines and the amount of recovery of skills that can be expected. The InternalBrace procedure doesn’t have that kind of experience built in yet and so far the expected recovery isn’t as good as it is for TJS, although it doesn’t take as long. If it was a pitcher’s patellar tendon you might have a different expectation for how close to pre-injury they’d expect to achieve and so forth. I’ve held on to Acuna twice now and knee injuries suck and will no doubt reduce some of his effectiveness but it’s a gamble I took and it might not play out well. Didn’t someone hang on to DeGrom? I know it’s not an easy decision to make.
I wouldn’t keep him if i had five guys I thought would bring me the most his year. But what the fuck do I know. I’m the idiot that didn’t keep Judge after three mediocre seasons 18-20. Since then he has played like a sure fire future Hall of Famer. I’m the dumbass who didn’t keep Verlander after the 2015 season because he was coming off an injury and the prior season to that was his worst full season statically of his career and seemingly in decline as he aged.
I’m the dumbass who didn’t keep Ohtani just before he started winning MVPs, but I think it’d be nuts to stash a Cole in this situation. He might be missing significant time next year too.
For a reference point, I was originally going to keep Cole, but after the news of him getting teste on his elbow, I am keeping Garrett Crochet instead. But, @Ron_Brand is right. It’s going to take Cole time next year to find his stride. I wouldn’t keep him unless it was a deep dynasty league with plenty of IL spots. He’s not young and will miss more than a full season.
