As you may remember, Roosevelt Leaks played LF on my 1970 and 1971 Brenham HS baseball teams. I talk to him every now and then and called him last summer when he did not come to the ‘70 team’s reunion after telling the host he was coming. I learned from him he had surgery for a neck injury and learned from one of his ‘70 teammates he also later had lower back surgery.
I wrote him a note last week to tell him about the honor the 1970 team received from the recent book I told y’all about here. I wrote because the last time I called to check on him I woke him up from a nap, and I was not about to do that again!
He called me yesterday, and we had a nice chat. I asked about his surgeries, and he said he is having to use a walker because of his lower back. He had a very positive attitude about his disabilities and said “It is what is. I am not mad at anybody.” I complimented him on his positivity.
Roosevelt Leaks is on a walker. Earl Campbell is in a wheelchair. Can you imagine?
