International signings - 2020

Reports are that the Astros have an agreement to sign 21 year old Cuban outfielder for @ 4 million. He is eligible to sign now due to his age but due to no team having money left, he will wait till July 2nd.

Because of COVID-19, MLB pushed off the start of the international signing period by six months. So instead of the 2020-2021 signing period starting up on July 2, 2020, it will now start up on January 15, 2021, and then the Astros will be able to make their $4M signing of Pedro Leon. He will become the Astros top OF prospect immediately upon signing (beating out Colin Barber and Jordan Brewer), and might even be their top position player prospect overall.

Has anyone heard any recent updates on this?

If the deal is completed. When exactly did they agree to terms?

Will he be a Click signing or a Luhnow signing?

As with most international free agent signings, the parties settled on terms a long time before the actual signing. Back in Feb, I think, it was reported to be a $4M deal for Leon but because of the timing of international signing periods and the availability of international signing bonus pool money, Leon won’t officially sign with the Astros until mid-January.

I’d call it a Click signing.
