In Praise of iMac

The iVibrator

Apple is super efficient with RAM. Iā€™m using the M1 Mac mini with 8GB, and I never have issues with RAM.

Yeah, the new iMacs look fantastic.

The Apple TV was a major let down, but at least it has a new remote.

I thought the new one was supposed to be able to run console-level games. :man_shrugging:

However, the new remote is almost worth the upgrade by itself. I love how they incorporated the most forward-thinking, cutting-edge technology from the [checks notes] original iPod.

If it worksā€¦

Nope. Itā€™s a spec bump only to an A12. By comparison, the iPhone 12 has an A14, so itā€™s two generations behind (I think the current Apple TV is an A10). Will it play games better? Sure. Console level? No way.

But yeah, the new remote looks nice.

Reviews/users are saying that the M1 Mac Mini is more powerful than the current Mac Pro. My old iMac crapped out about 4 months too soon, because I would happily get either a Mini or a new iMac to replace them.

My only reticence would be that I would need an external drive to host my movie library, which adds clutter. Right now, I have 8.25TB onboard my iMac, so I donā€™t have anything else sitting on my desk apart from the keyboard and trackpad (and the fucking cat). If I had a new iMac or a Mini, I would need an external drive, defeating the aesthetics somewhat.

Itā€™s going to have to happen at some point but, by then, I expect I wonā€™t have to worry so much about network bandwidth.

Sounds like Iā€™m not the only person who hates the remote on the current Apple TV 4K.

You could always go with a NAS that you could place anywhere an ethernet cable could reach, especially if the storage is mostly media. Those can get pricey though. I took the cheap route and hooked an external drive to a raspberry pi for the el cheapo ā€œNAS.ā€

I believe you mentioned you use Plex, yes? The NAS can also run your Plex server, keeping it completely independent of your computer. Again, itā€™s not cheap, though.

I FUCKING HATE THAT PIECE OF SHIT.

You know who hates the current Apple TV remote?

[insert Gary Oldman from ā€œThe Professionalā€ meme here]

I do not, and have never, used mine.

The new Airs are, from what Iā€™ve read, outSTANding machines, and I plan to pick (at least) one up here before too long. Fortunately for me, I hate movies and I hate TV so I wonā€™t have any storage issues.

Yeah, and completely fan-less. The M1s are amazing.

The fanless bit freaks me out. Itā€™s really amazing how they dissipate heat.

I just looked and the new iMacs, and the least expensive one is the same price I paid for a Macbook Pro almost a decade ago.

I use iTunes the TV app. My bandwidth concern is that, when I call up a movie on my Apple TV, it draws it from the TV app on my iMac. If the library was on a NAS, that means the movie is on the network twice: once from the NAS to the iMac and then again from the iMac to the Apple TV. I think there is a way to run the TV and Music apps on a NAS, but I already had the 8TB internal HDD from my old iMac, so it was a no-brainer to carry that forward.

If thereā€™s a way to have everything pull content directly from a NAS, then thatā€™ll be the way to go once Iā€™m ready to replace this iMac. Considering I had its predecessor 10 years, we will probably be watching stuff directly on our eyeballsā€¦I mean iBallsā€¦by then.

I figured they had a different sort of technology lined up for their iBalls but at this point who the hell knows.

Yeah, I see. For some reason I was thinking you were using Plex.

They priced them right in between the outgoing 21.5" and 27" iMacs.

I suspect theyā€™ll ditch the 27" iMac now; if you want more screen real estate you can get a Mini and drive up to 4 (I believe) screens off it.

The IDammit is another $200.
