In Praise of iMac

I can see potential future MagSafe accessories being useful, so the technology may advance to being a practical advantage. But it’s just not right now. I did order a headphone dongle.

I agree. We’ll just have to see to what extent it’s useful. The MagSafe wallet, while a fine idea, is already proving to be a bust.

Upgrade to Big Sur complete. Very pretty.

I must say, to borrow from Steve Jobs’ vernacular, the 5k display on this iMac is gorgeous.

Not unsurprisingly, the new iMac just flies through transcoding of movies; about 3x quicker than the old Mac.

So I did get the new 20W charger for my new iPhone. That thing is the shit. It charged my iPhone in about 15 minutes, and fully charged my iPad in about 1.5 hours. Where has this thing been my whole life?

Tim Apple’s to-do list.

HH, here’s the ($549!) over-the-ear Bluetooth headphones you’ve been looking for:

That price tag is completely absurd.

I have over-the-ear BT headphones:

PX7 Wireless Headphones | Bowers & Wilkins

Less than those AirPods, and I’m guessing twice the quality. I’m just not trusting Apple to be at the forefront of headphone quality, especially at the pricepoint. The B&W are actually good noise-cancelling headphones, and I use them on airplanes, when traveling, etc. I prefer open back cans, which are decidedly not noise-cancelling…or even noise filtering.

I take it you recommend these. I’m looking for good quality over-the-ear BT headphones and that price point doesn’t scare me if they are what I need. I would use them for editing so latency would be an issue for me. Have you used them to watch movies or live events and do they keep well in sync?

I recommend them for what I use them for: mostly listening to music in noisy environments. I use on an airplane or where other things are happening when I want ambient noise minimized. I have occasionally used them to watch a movie or YouTube video, and have not experienced any latency issues, but then I haven’t really focused on that and it’s not a priority for me. I don’t like using them for live video or events because I don’t like the sound produced by closed back headphones, and especially noise cancelling ones. Like all closed back headphones, they sound compressed and one-dimensional. There is very little sound stage and you know you’re listening through headphones, as opposed to open back headphones where it sounds like you’re in the same room with the speaker/music. But given the limitations of the design and BT connectivity, I’d say they’re pretty good.

Also, these are pretty small, which makes them sort of in between “on ear” and “over ear”. Not sure if that makes a difference to you, but as someone who wears glasses, wearing these for a long time with the glasses on can be a comfort issue. I usually take my glasses off.

I’m certain they’re not as good as anything in the $200-300 price range, much less the mid-$500s.

For iPhone 12 owners, this looks cool:

So that looks cool if you don’t put your phone in a case. I know Apple makes Magsafe cases, but they are ugly and not much protection. This is good if you roll commando or if you want to take your phone out of the case every time you charge it, which is after all, the kind of convenience wireless charging was made for.

I roll commando.

I want to have sex with the new iMac.

The M1 chip is the equivalent Captain Marvel; just wrecking anything in its path.

There’s probably a dongle for that.

Also…an orgasm is a $400 upgrade.

But it’s a beautiful, gorgeous, incredible orgasm in full HDR DolbyVision.

8 GB of RAM? Seriously?
