In Praise of iMac

They said it works with ShareTime (or whatever they call it) so that multiple people can watch the same thing at the same time, collaborating on documents or watching movies. This does sound a little dystopian, though.

It makes no damn sense!

Compels me, though.

If the form factor more closely resembled something like Google Glass, I could see this taking off big time, even at the high price tag. As things stand now, I don’t know who this is for.

The battery will get better over time. For now, at least, if you’re going to be using it over an extended period, presumably you’ll be relatively static and so can plug in. I can see how detaching and reconnecting every time you go to the fridge or bathroom could get irritating.

Presumably you will be able to hook it up to a USB power pack for additional juice on the go.

They should equip the thing with a USB outlet detector, so you know instantly where they are in any room.

It’s very niche.

For those of you who didn’t watch today’s presentation:

One more thing…

They’re dropping the “Hey” from “Hey Siri” - so you just say “Siri” - and allowing follow-up commands without having to say “Siri” again.

This is going to be a disaster.

I don’t know who is the market for this. But I also remember Steve Jobs saying about the iPad that no one wanted an iPad until they made it then everyone wanted an iPad. I wonder if this will follow that same path.

For example, I can see, say, someone living in a small apartment (or parents’ basement) wanting one to have the big screen experience.

The small apartment/parents’ basement crowd is well known for having $3,500 lying around for a wearable monitor.

One thing I remember from my time in apartments back in the day: people in shitty places often had the nicest cars outside.

You guys don’t have a burner computer just for watching porn?

That thought occurred to me. But the cost, battery life, and most importantly the form factor is going to be a big turnoff for a lot of people. So is needing to put in special Zeiss glass inserts or whatever the fuck if you wear glasses. There are a lot more caveats than the original iPad had.

Out of everything they showed today with the Vision Pro, I think the productivity angle has the potential to be the most transformational. If they lean into that:

  • Make a separate product, the Vision Mini or whatever
  • Remove the battery and the onboard M2 CPU. Make it so that it only plugs into your Mac and let the Mac do all the heavy lifting
  • Remove the gesture sensors
  • Remove the speakers
  • Reduce the size/weight
  • Reduce the cost by up to half

I think that product would fly off the shelves.

Back in the early days of the interwebs one of the radio hosts here would hide his virtual stash in a folder named ‘fantasy hockey’.

Basically a fancy monitor, per moriarty’s comment above.

I agree that all of your points make sense. It’s clearly not ready to be worn on the hoof, so you’re going to be tied to a power outlet anyway, why not embrace that?

My only quibble would be that I think you’ll want to keep the onboard computing power for media/games, so you aren’t tied to a Mac for these. Buses, trains and planes mostly have USB ports in the seats these days, so you can shut out the world and enjoy your journey. If I was still globetrotting like I used to, I’d absolutely have one of these for those long haul flights.

ETA: One additional feature. Instead of the goggles displaying your eyes, you should have the option to black out the lenses and display a text message. That way, when someone bothers you, the AI will produce a list of responses you can scroll through to choose to be displayed to the outside world. Yes, I’m thinking very much of T1 with this idea.

Conversely, a game streamer I once watched used to keep all of his footage and other project files in a folder called “horse porn”.

In the same vein as this, I once saw a comment from someone who claimed to live in a very conservative neighborhood, so he changed his wifi network name to “FBI Van #4”.

The motivation behind removing the onboard M2 is simply cost reduction. My mythical product wouldn’t be a standalone device so it doesn’t need that much processing.
