Apple software updates…

My iPhone upgraded to iOS 16.1.1, and now the time on the lock screen is using ugly fat digits that remind me of those granny phones with the humongous buttons. Of all the things to screw around with, why that? Did Jonny Ive really sign off on that?

My wife has been griping to no end about the exact same thing. Kids are on our lawn too.

I like those kids.

I got over the big numbers pretty quickly. If I can overcome some sort of annoyance, I expect anyone can.

Although the new OS drains the battery considerably faster than the old one did and that does piss me off, especially since, you know, they’re not currently selling new phones.

Don’t fret! You can change the awful chonky numbers to other numbers, some of which are even more awful!

They should just switch to Roman numerals and be done with it.

Hey Siri how much battery do I have

Man, this update really is a battery sucker, isn’t it? I hope this gets addressed soon. Before the update I would usually be at 65-70% at the end of the day. As I type this, I’m at 30%.

Following an internet tip, I turned off smart charging (“System” > “Battery” > “Battery Health and Charging”), rebooted the phone, re-enabled smart charging, and gave it a full charge. While it still drains faster than it did before the update, it’s much better than before the tweak. Before the update, a normal day after an overnight charge would leave me at 65-70%. After the update, I was winding up at about 15% at the end of the day (and I’m not a heavy user). After the tweak, I’m finishing the day at 55-60%.

Mac porn: new M2 Mac Minis with a $100 price drop to $599.

It really is a steal for an amazing small but powerful computer.

Also, fucking finally, a non-Intel Mac desktop that supports three displays without dropping $2k on a Mac Studio (Mini with M2 Pro is $1299).

Oh happy day! Citrix has finally fixed the glitch where the cursor was offset by about 1/2 inch vertically.

I have no idea what either of those boxes are, but the answer to “Apple, why?” is “because we fucking said so”.

Nothing too earth-shattering here. Apple isn’t the only computer manufacturer that has a little bit of overlap in their product lines. One could easily do the exact same thing with a Dell.

Agreed. I posted this to reflect your comment about the yawning gap in Apple’s desktop lineup that has now been tightly closed. You now have an amazing range of options stepping up incrementally from $600 to $4,000.

Got it. I guess I just honed in on the “maybe the best advice is you shouldn’t buy either one” which I didn’t really agree with.

Yeah, the conclusion is a little muddy. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I think the point is that - for the majority of users - the non-Pro M2 is more computing power than they’ll ever need, so just stick to that.

My M1 Mini has been fantastic for me.
