I have terrible Whataburger news

The new ad campaign’s tagline is “Come one, come y’all”.

I miss Whataburger guy.

While that’s unfortunate, I have terrific personal Whataburger news. I now have no less than 3 Whataburgers within driving distance of me. When the failed Florida experiment of the early aughts took place, I thought I’d never see the day they’d be back.

Thank you for the reminder to count our blessings.

I myself have the big orange W flanking me to the north and south.

I can order my green Chile burger while gazing at the Pikes Peak.

Whataburger guy is dead.
Long live Whataburger guy!

I guess it’s just me but it seems as though there has been a slow but steady regression in quality since they got bought by BDT Capital Partners. I have read of a shit ton more of worker complaints since they acquired the business too. That said, I’m fixing to go get a burger from them for lunch today.

I have terrible Whataburger news:

It’s now mid at best

I generally get a specialty burger, usually the green chile but sometimes another offering. They seem to hold up just fine.

The #1 customized in whatever way is fairly nondescript.

Fries do seem to be less consistently good.

The vanilla shake is top notch.

The fries are pretty consistently trash

My sojourn to Whataburger in March when I was in Houston was a great disappointment.

It’s not just you, the quality dipped in recent years, but then the quality of everything has at the same or faster rate.

I’m still pissed they refuse to bring back the chop house. It must be close to 10 years since they had it and I won’t ever get over it

I will say, believe it or not, that the big 3 of small town highway burger stops - Whata, Sonic, DQ - all depend on the ownership and management of said locations.

The DQ in Johnson City has been inedible for years (it’s a running joke that there’s a job advert in the local paper for a manager literally every week, no idea what the owner is doing)…the DQ in Lampassas was about the best fast food burger I’ve had a few years ago.

The Sonic in Marble Falls is vastly superior to the Whataburger right across the street.

Can I explain it? No.

Ha! I had a DQ Dude (chicken fried steak sandwich) there driving 281 to Ft Worth a couple of months back. It was exceptionally good. The shake was good too. But fuck that assclown that sings that DQ Blizzard jingle. Rhyming blizzard with triggered!?!? Someone needs to rip out his gizzard… wait humans don’t have gizzards. Fuck him anyway.

Whataburger brought back my favorite sammich - the Monterrey Melt (with grilled chicken) - and then took it away after about 2 months.

Their Patty Melt ain’t bad either, but sometimes they get it way too greasy.

And yes, their fries are terrible, unless you luck into a fresh batch.

Even then, they seem unfamiliar with the concept of salt.

I’m not willing to believe that the Orange and White has paled until I try one of these Florida outposts. I’ll report back when I do.

And damning by faint praise, they’re still better than In N Out. At least Whataburger’s onion rings are still better than the fast food competition.

I’m so picky/spoiled about onion rings I never think to order them at a drive-thru, though I love them. Will try next time.

Oh they are by no means great onion rings, it’s just that they actually have a ring of onion in them rather than being a stale but soggy biscuit of onion powder mush.

Fries well done is the only acceptable or appropriate way to order at In-N-Out.
