Happy National Guitar Day

I’ve been very lax in playing lately (divorce and all) but I think I’ll fire them up after work today.
I’ve had as many as 14 guitars but then I watched a YouTube of Rick Nielson’s guitar collection and he had literally hundreds and I thought “why have that many guitars?”, which made me look at my collection and I realized I only played quite a few of them once a month after tuning them up and polishing them. So now I have 3: a Cory Wong Strat (amazing guitar), an Ed O’Brien Strat (also amazing but without italics) and a Taylor T5z Classic (which I’m about to sell).
I know I have 2 artist models but I swear I didn’t seek them out for the names. The Cory Wong is the spankiest, Stratiest Strat ever, and the Ed O’Brien has a Fernandes sustainer pickup which is fun (it also houses my Fishman Triple Play MIDI ‘pickup’).

So Happy National Guitar Day to all!

I have a 1981 American Strat and an Alverez acoustic-electric, unfortunately I can’t play anymore. Never was very good but chemo induced neuropathy in my hands makes it damn near impossible. I still want to get a Casino and make noisy feedback sounds. I used to house my cousin’s overflow collection–the ones he didn’t want his wife to know about. ES-335, SG, some kind of Rickenbacker (I don’t remember the model but it is now owned by Richard Fortus of GNR, or at least that is who Matt sold it to) and a Telecaster. Matt kept his Strat, Les Paul and Hummingbird at home. Cousin Matt never would let me play that Hummingbird but it was a beauty. For some reason, I have always loved guitars.

One of the guitars that I sold was a Casino and I wish I hadn’t sold it, it’s a great guitar. Very creamy sounding, easy to play, has a small neck. I’m thinking when I sell my Taylor that I’m either going to get a Casino or a Tele Thinline or maybe an Ovation Adamas.

I too love guitars, and while I’m not particularly good, I’ve been described as “not the worst guitar player I know”. Which is more satisfying a comment than you might initially think. I currently have more guitars than sense. I have four electrics: my prize, a Paul Reed Smith Custom 24; an early 90’s American Strat; a cheap Ibanez something or other which is smooth and fast and stays in tune for at least five notes; and a homemade kit Tele replica, which actually was fun to put together and finish. I have four acoustic: two Seagulls, including a some such Anniversary model (or more correctly “Anniversaire”) which is a fantastic guitar and I play more than any other, and a regular old 6-string; a Martin X series; and a beat-up old Ovation, which I cannot stand so it stays in a case in the closet. Honestly, I play the PRS and the Seagull 90% of the time. They look nice hung on the wall. Except the Ovation. Did I mention I hate those things. I have a friend who has a serious collection, has probably over 50 on his walls, and I get to noodle around on his cool stuff sometimes.

Another guitar lover, here, but I’m particularly not-good – I know most of the chord shapes and can play a passable rhythm with a few arpeggiated chords tossed in, but I can’t even begin to solo. I have a beat-to-shit Ovation knock-off that I got in high school, which hasn’t been touched in years. My lone electric is a Mexican Strat in not-so-great condition, which I play sporadically. Then I have a late-90’s, maybe early 00’s Taylor 414ce-Limited in Koa that I play maybe once a week or so. All of those are lefties.

I’ve recently considered adding a classical nylon-stringer to the collection, just for putzing around on the couch… Need to stop into Southpaw and see what they have on the wall.

I have had quite a collection over the years. I pared it down to a singular Taylor 314 Nylon. It was the guitar that i always reached for. About 2 years ago when my previous house was on the market, someone stole it from an upstairs bedroom. They replaced it with some piece of shit that I smashed out of anger.

Now I’m guitarless

Someone stole your Taylor and swapped in another guitar in its place? First , how long before you noticed? Two, that took some planning.

It was a few weeks I imagine. I was going through a divorce and selling the house and didn’t have much time to pick around. I tried to look through video footage as well but didn’t crack the case.

You know it was your soon to be ex, right?

Hudson cracks the case, yet again.

Gotta earn the right to wear that fedora

I’m a good classical guitarist. Two of my best guitars are concert quality classicals made in tiny workshops in Spain, and a third is a Japanese Masaru Kohno made in the 70s. I spend at least an hour playing most days, and have played a lot of the warhorses in the classical repertoire (though I’ve forgotten much more than I remember). Tonight I spent the evening sight-reading studies by Mauro Giuliano and trying to re-memorize Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring. There’s a level of player that I’m not, but I’m at least the level of a lazy graduate student at an ok college program.

My children grew up with a father who periodically screamed dammit I broke a nail.

That said, all I ever really wanted to do was play Layla, and I still haven’t learned it. I have a Stratocaster, but it sits on a stand by my desk and I admire it. I also have a Martin 0M that I play when I’ve had enough wine to want to sing.

Happy guitar day!

The only musical talent I possess involves bongo, harmonica, and being drunk enough (but not too drunk) to sing tolerably

My grandad, however, was ridiculous. Short of the piano, anything with strings he taught himself how to play: guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, standup bass. My brother and our 2 uncles have all of his old instruments, I need to get them to have a backyard jam session sometime this spring.
