My nephew recently graduated from Baylor, and will start a finance job with Chase in New York City next month. My wife and I are considering graduation gifts, but are unsure what would be appropriate. I’m of the opinion that a something he can keep/use forever will help mark the achievement and will he’ll always remember that’s what his uncle and aunt gave him for graduation. I was think something like a very nice writing implement or briefcase thing or useful piece of luggage. Others say “oh just give him cash”. I’m quite the nerd when it comes to these things, so perhaps I’m far out of touch. Any thoughts?
A nice leather briefcase/tote seems appropriate for the finance world.
As I was reading the first few lines my initial thought was “briefcase” (or the modern young professional person leather equivalent)
I feel like a briefcase is a very personal choice while a high quality writing implement will give you a much broader target area.
Agree with Charles–writing implement, and you are an expert, HH.
I don’t know that I’m an expert, but I’m certainly a pen nerd. That was my first thought.
Candlesticks are always nice gift…
Put me down as another vote for a writing implement. Especially appropriate as it’s very you.
You are an expert to me.
I think I’d be thrilled to get a cool pen in that situation.
Alternatively you could give him a hat you slapped of a waiters head who sat down to take your order.
A writing implement would be a great idea and I’d think would be even more meaningful coming from someone like yourself who knows more than a thing or two about them.
Alternatively, (merging threads) you could gift your nephew with his first pair of proper city boots. Chelseas seem a pro pos given his job will be in NYC.
Where I come from “Chelsea” boots are Doc Martins with steel toecaps.
The game of gentlemen as played by hooligans.
So to close this out…we decided to get him a nice pair of cuff links (his Mom said he’s expressed interest in being a French cuff man), and a pen. I went with the Parker 51. A hard to beat classic. It’s a ballpoint, as I don’t think he’s into fountain pens, plus he’s left handed. I even got him the Baylor colors. I hope he enjoys it for many years.
That’s a good looking pen.
Nice job
Good man
Not really being a pen guy at all, I’ve always loved the Parker Jotter.
Struggling with fountain pens is just one of the reasons why being left handed is just plain weird. That said, I always kick myself for not learning to hit left handed. My dad tried to get me to. I coulda been somebody!

The Jotter is a great workhorse pen.
