The complete lack of depth is overwhelming. I understand JV, Osuna got hurt and Smith decided not to play. But 10 of 11 rookies in the pen (before James demotion)? Isn’t last night’s result expected in that situation?
Also on offense: If any player ever needed a day off it is Altuve. Again injuries: Should be A. Diaz. Altuve has been terrible in ever facet of the game (hitting, base running, defense). Who plays 2b to give him a day off? Gurriel? Stubbs (cough)?
Straw hasn’t capitalized on his opportunity (.295 OPS). Maldanado is a good backup catcher but now he’s catching every game because the other options are Garneau (age 32 with 128 games in parts of six seasons) and Stubbs.
And the farm system and the loss of draft picks. Depressing. Tuesday was a must win. This is a crucial homestand. We could be sellers at the deadline (Greinke)?
You can add Cy Sneed and most of the bullpen to the list, too. This team is devoid of many key pieces that made them dominant the past three seasons, and the ones they do have are drastically underperforming (Altuve, Bregman, Pressly, Springer pre injury).
This year will not really count in those things, at least not nearly to the extent they typically do. And I meant the Astros management, not necessarily the players. I think in general, the players play hard and want to win to the extent they always do.
They lost last night because a veteran reliever, whom they counted on from the get go, couldn’t get the job done. Again…the rookies ain’t been the problem. In fact, this team is probably 1-16 on their way to 5-55 without those rookies.
I can’t imagine that there will be any buyers. The Yankees and Dodgers certainly don’t need him, and any playoffs this year will be a bigger crapshoot than they usually are, where anybody could get knocked out by some fluke (if they even happen). I don’t see anybody giving up anything of value in order to prepare for playoffs that may not even happen.
