The long-running saga of Depp v. Heard is coming to an end. TV coverage just spoodged itself as the jury returned with a verdict, only for the judge to send them back because they hadn’t completed the damages on the form.
That part of the form has two lines: Compensatory Damages and Punitive Damages. I’m not sure I’d want a multi-million dollar lawsuit resting on the say-so of people too stupid to write down numbers in boxes on a form.
About four episodes into Pachinko and so far it’s fantastic. The way they bounce between generations and their lives starting from 1910 up until 1989 is masterful and the performances are great. A tragic part of history few know about but ends up being more about perseverance than sorrow. The opening title sequence is amazing and never skipped as well.
I was really looking forward to The Offer, the Paramount+ show detailing the making of The Godfather, and then I saw review after review trashing it and lost my enthusiasm. Yesterday I finally gave it a go and I thought the first episode was pretty good. Maybe I’m just a super-nerd about TG (my all-time favorite film) so wanting it to be good is clouding my judgment, but unless it goes wheels-off downhill I’m in for the rest of it.
I’ve seen all 8 episodes of The Offer that have dropped so far. The show certainly has its flaws. The dialog will often make you cringe and think to yourself no real person would ever actually say that. Like many current shows that try to recreate the recent past you never really buy into the look. The actor playing Al Ruddy is a bit of a dud. And since Ruddy’s writings are the source material for the show the portrayal here is that he is the one who saved The Godfather from turning into shit. Again and again and again…
But despite the flaws I have enjoyed the hell out of the show and can’t wait for new episodes to drop each week. The parts of the show dealing with the real mafia in NYC during the filming of the movie are especially entertaining. And of course learning how Coppola and company dealt with issues occurring during writing, casting and production of the movie.
If you’re a fan of The Godfather, I can’t imagine you not enjoying this series.
I loved the first season, I recommend it to people all the time and have never gotten a bad response. The second season is less “fun” but is still very good.
I wasn’t sure what the deal with the orbital hotel in For All Mankind’s S3 premier, but it makes sense very quickly in episode two and now we’re off to the races.
I don’t think anyone has yet mentioned Barry which is on HBO Max.
Very dark and very funny show about a hitman played by Bill Hader. The recent season 3 finale was really twisted and as fucking fantastic a tv episode as you will ever see. Overall the writing on the show has been so great as is the acting. Particularly notable is the performance by Anthony Carrigan who plays the NoHo Hank character. If you ever watched the Gotham tv show he was Victor Zsasz. Ex-SNLer Hader not only plays the lead but is co-creator and co-writer of the show and directed a number of episodes (including the recent season ender).
Not nearly to the same level but also recommended on HBO Max is Gentleman Jack. If you likes your 19th century British lesbian costume dramas (and who doesn’t?) you should check it out. The Anne Lister character portrayed in the show did in fact actually exist and the series is based on the diaries she kept.
Barry is absolutely incredible. If you would’ve told me at the end of his SNL run that Bill Hader, most famous for breaking about as often as Jimmy Fallon on SNL, was going to create one of the best dark comedies of all time, I would’ve laughed in your face.
I cannot recommend Barry enough. Also, Henry Winkler is in it and is absolutely fantastic.
