Correa Re-Signing: Will He or Won't He?

I agree with this. Thoughts on why that is? Minnesota gets more competitive, but for how long?

Barring a major change, he’s going to opt out next year and go for that huge contract. Do we know for sure the Astros were offering opt outs? If not, there’s your answer.

I have to think they were not.

I don’t get why the Astros wouldn’t match that contract. Only a 3 year commitment not some 8/300 albatross. All years Correa is still in his prime too, you wouldn’t be paying him 35m at 36 years old.

Then his timing was affected by the CBA negotiations which delayed many of the signings. Correa may be buying a year then and will reenter the free agent market. A solid year from Bregman should make up for some of the offensive dropoff. Pena is supposed to be stronger defensively than he is at bat; another Torres or Metzger

This sucks & the Astros are now significantly worse for 2022. There aren’t viable replacements remaining in free agency nor trade either.

I’m disgusted at all parties involved.

Crane isn’t cheap, but he needs to get over his aversion to offering any player a contract longer than six years in length. The market has been set for elite players in their prime, and he’s simply not willing to play in it with his current standards.

In this case he didn’t even have to offer 6 years. It was simply a 3 or probably a 1 year commitment. I don’t get not matching the offer.

I don’t get it either. The only thing I can think of is Carlos got tired of Crane dicking around in negotiations and took a comparable offer elsewhere. Either that or him and Click were fighting against the first year opt out.

I’m not convinced that they’re unwise to refrain from long-term contracts. Still have kind of an In Luhnow I Trust feeling there.

Do we know what the Astros were offering? Do we know they didn’t at least match it? We talk about this often, but with the taxes in MN it pushes his take home pay well under $100MM. Players have shown increasingly that they want the “respect”, even if it means sacrificing actual dollars in their bank account. I’m guessing Correa simply wanted to play somewhere other than Houston.

In certain cases, sure. The Angels giving Pujols that contract at his age was never going to end well. But, Correa wasn’t turning 28 until late September. He would have been 33 for 95% of year 7 of a new contract; 34 for 95% of year 8, etc.

Also, the Astros play in the eighth-largest media market in the U.S. and the fourth largest city. They have big market resources.

Here’s my problem with the philosophy: You win World Series with elite players, not a bunch of average to slightly above average players. Elite players in their prime are not settling for 5 or 6 year deals.

Fast forward four years when Alvarez and Tucker are free agents. If they continue on their current trajectories, they are going to be seeking deals in the 7 or 8 year range, too.

I agree. If the Astros have shown anything in the last five years it’s that you can build a perennial contender without albatross contracts. Smart drafting and player development are far more important than paying huge money to a former star.

Yeah, maybe by degree because Cole was such an ass immediately after Game Seven. Only by that small distinction for me, and Correa’s ego is/was bigger than the other two combined. I do not wish him injury or harm, but I hope he is as disappointing to the Twins as he often was to us.

How the fuck do you know he did not?

Come on, folks.

Carlos/Boras wanted a deal they could opt out of after one year and chase the huge money.

Why give Correa permission to walk whenever he wants just to get one more year of him?

Also, if what I’ve read is correct, Correa’s former agent gets most of the fees off this deal, so it’s a winner for Boras as well since he’ll get his fat payday along with Carlos next year.

Crane isn’t to blame for Correa wanting out.

Oh I hope he falls on his ass with the Twins. But Cole rose to an unprecedented level of douchebag for me. Correa and Springer? I just hope they fail. Cole? I hope his dick falls off.

Oh, really? I sure thought I read Correa signed a three-year deal.

Maybe you should curb your “I hate Crane” posting until you know FACTS about the negotiations.

Yep, I agree with the distinction. They are in the same room for me, but Cole is locked in the closet.

This should apply to hating Correa too then. You don’t know the facts yet either
