Correa Re-Signing: Will He or Won't He?

Given their penchant for 13 pitchers, there are already too many guys in the OF, especially on the corners. Of course, I’m not married to McCormick. If Leon, or someone else, is a better option, so be it. But they’re gonna have to be able to play CF. And I don’t mean “play like Tucker in CF”. But it’s gonna be a tight squeeze next year.

Oh, I know re too many. That’s why I asked him who he would trade to get Leon there.

Don’t know much about Leon. Can he play CF?

He is originally a CF, but the Astros, in their infinite wisdom, have played him more at SS.

Leon also played one game at 3rd during his rehab down at the spring training site. 3B plays at the SS spot a good bit when they shift.

Zero.

It’s Correa’s 27th birthday today. Today is also Jeremy Peña’s birthday. Just an interesting observation.

Most certainly quite irrelevant and probably not all that interesting but…

At the time of his 24th birthday (which is how old Jeremy Pena is today), CC had already been in the major leagues for nearly 4 years.

I wouldn’t say irrelevant, but Correa was drafted out of high school and the team had a huge investment in him.

They NEEDED to move him as fast as he performed.

Pena was drafted out of college

And was sidetracked by a pandemic.

Correa was drafted #1 overall, full stop.

This is a very strange argument.

I have not heard any confirmation on a 6/210 offer, so clearly it was just rumor.

That clearly would have been a huge step, especially the lack of state taxes and his ability to possibly get a 4/90 contract at age 33

So we are still at 5/160.

My thoughts:

  1. the Astros should not negotiate against themselves. He and/or his people should make counter offer. If they don’t then no offer was going to be acceptable during the 5 day exclusive window.

  2. Altuve got 5/151 2 years before he was a FA that took him through his age 34 season. I know it’s a different front office, but why can’t this one make an offer for Correa through age 34? Even if they back AAV to 30 mil, that’s 8/240

  3. Does this offer get pulled once exclusive period is over and they start over?

  4. If FA shortstops start getting signed, at what point do the Astros stop waiting on Correa and try to sign one before they lose out? Or is it Correa or none? What about trade options?

Why would you expect the Astros to confirm anything in an ongoing negotiation?

Everything that gets reported is a rumor until it’s confirmed. And the only thing that could confirm it would be Correa or the Astros coming out and saying it.

Ok I admit confirmed was a poor word choice.

I should have said “reported”

But to answer your question, the Astros want ( need?) to win the court of public opinion.

If they made an offer of 6/210 it would definitely be in their best interest to “confirm” it and put the pressure back on Correa. Or at least look like the “good guys”

Jim Crane wants us fans to stay happy enough to keep spending money.

Team made a reasonable offer. If the 6/210 is true - and it was leaked for a reason - that is all the ‘publicity’ management needs. That’s a good number. No doubt that CC can do better on the open market. But that is an offer that if he wants to play the bulk of his baseball career next to Altuve, he certainly can.

The rest is all machismo. Let’s apply the 4% retirement rule to CC. Forget what ever he has made. Live off 4% for the remained of his life. No investment. I gave the government 45% - $94,500,000. I think he has an accountant who can do better. So let’s imagine that Carlos keeps $115,500,000. He puts that money in an annuity earning 3%. He spends $4,620,000 annually. When he passes on at the ripe old age of 90, he leaves his family around $110,000,000. Not the Rockefellers. But a pretty nice lifestyle.

Oh, if he signs a ‘discount’ contract at the age of 32 with another team - call it 3 for $30.

Well, you get the point.

Should he choose not to take the offer - its either machismo (Gotta be the highest paid guy at the position) or he wants to wear Yanqui pinstripes.

Or he wants to play with AJ

Or the lowball offers in the spring offended him

Or he wants to get away from the cheating crap

Or myriad other reasons we just don’t know

Or he didn’t grow up in Puerto Rico dreaming of playing in Houston.

FWIW, Jim Bowden predicts 10/$300M for Correa.

I’ll be shocked if it’s that little.

What is it with the human psyche that there is never enough money? $100 million or even $50 million, his family wouldn’t have to work for generations.
