Cooperstown

Looks like I may have the opportunity to spend some time in Cooperstown next month…just a day or so on a Fall Foliage drive through upstate NY. We will budget a day there for the HOF which I’m sure some of you have visited. Anything else I should make sure and see/do in Cooperstown or vacinity?

It’s been a long time since I was there, but as kid I was a fan of the James Fenimore Cooper Leatherstocking novels. When I was driving around out there it was pretty cool to think of Lake Otswego as Lake Glimmerglass. I tried to re-read a couple, but as I recall I only got through one. They’re pretty unreadable.

ETA: There’s also a great summer opera there, like the Santa Fe Opera, but its season may be done.

If you’ve only got a day, you’ll probably want to spend most of it at the HOF. So much cool stuff there.

But if you’re actively looking for something else to do, my son and I enjoyed this boat tour – beautiful views out on the water:

I second this. The HOF is a full day affair.

Jealous.

Does Pete Rose still have his storefront shrine to himself there?

If so you could go there and vomit all over the place for me.

Sorry. I hate vomiting.

Yes, as many have already posted…HOF Museum can easily be an all day affair if that’s what you want. I have been there many times and it never gets old.

Other places of potential interest:

Doubleday Cafe - just down the street from HOF. Good food with beer on tap. Last time there I bought one of their Tshirts that read, “A drinking town with a baseball problem.”

The hot dog place below Mickey’s Place is also pretty good if you want a quick bite to eat and don’t have time to sit down and get served. I got a smoked sauage on a bun with grilled peppers and onions that was fantastic.

Doubleday Field - a lot of history at that field and worth the short walk from the HOF imo.

Cooperstown Diner - tiny little spot for breakfast right on main street. Nothing special but again, kind of a cool little spot to hit.

Memorabilia stores - Apart from the HOF itself, I just loved walking from one memorabilia store to the next…exactly like my wife walks from one clothing store to another. In fact there was half-day where we split and did just that. She went her way and I went mine and it was fantastic. Each one of these stores has their own vibe and many are like walking into the HOF in terms of inventory they carry. Also a couple cool bat shops and a couple art/photo galleries that I thought were great.

It’s a shame you only have a day. I have been multiple times but know I will go back with my wife down the line for another long weekend, etc. That cool of a place if you are a baseball fan.
