College Hoops 2021

That game wore me out. Go Coogs!

Still have TCU (Arizona), Texas, and Tech later.

Also that team from Durham with that one coach guy

I’ve always liked Iowa State’s hoops program. They’re always good with a bunch of players you’ve never heard of, so I’m rooting for them later.

I care more about what I’m going to do for lunch than I do about these next 2 games.

You don’t have to watch basketball. You do have to eat.

Always loved Tim Russert’s story about his dad. He always said “You gotta eat…”

When Tim was older he heard the rest “…if you’re gonna drink.”

BBQ chicken for supper for me…though lunch was three hours ago.

I am making carne guisada and jalapeño pinto beans from Homesick Texan today, which makes for some very pleasant Sunday simmering. Lunch was leftover harissa-flavored fancy pants pork and beans from the inaccurately named Nothing Fancy by Bon Appetit’s Allison Roman, which is an excellent cookbook. Dinner tonight (the guisada and beans are for lunches this week) is sheet pan gnocchi with arugula and Parmesan and jammy cherry tomatoes.

Go Horns.

Fancy pants pork and beans sounds pretty good.

On a side note…I was in my 20s before I learned that it was “pork and beans”, not “porkin beans”, as if it was a variety of bean called a “porkin”.

And on a side, side note…Mrs Hawk planted the spring veggie/herb garden yesterday. Both cherry tomatoes and grape tomatoes are on the way.

Now that’s right up my alley today, if I had planned ahead. I’ve been craving fajitas and all the trimmings, but I’m bacheloring it this weekend, so it’s either eat leftovers or get takeout texmex.

Made a quick and easy Irish Guinness Soda Bread yesterday, that was just as good for breakfast this morning. Highly recommend it.

eta: I’d post the bread recipe if I knew how to post pictures (not links) on here

My garden plantings will happen next week, once my knees recover from the plumbing project of late last week.

What variety of cherry/grape tomatoes do you like? I’ve had great luck with ones called “sun gold”

Unsure of the varieties. The cherry actually say “patio” tomatoes. The grapes just say “grape”. The bell peppers are called “red beauties”.

I had a two pound slab of pork salt that I rinsed and soaked repeatedly on Friday. I chopped it up into half inch cubes yesterday and tossed it in a pot with pinto beans, a little salt, pepper, onion, garlic cumin and let it simmer all day. Sure is good.

ETA: Actually I didn’t add any salt. The point of rinsing of the salt pork slab thing is to reduce salt.

I should also add that I’m grilling chicken breasts, but for the week, not for today. It’s always useful to have a few grilled chicken breasts around for quick/easy meals.

And I grilled pork chops last night. They were outSTANDing, as Chuck would say.

I don’t have a gas grill at my usual place, yet, so if I’m gonna build a charcoal/wood fire there’s no reason not to cook extra chicken breasts or boneless thighs, once you’ve got the fire going. It’s wasteful if you don’t, honestly.

You guys transitioned from seeing Kelvin Sampson shirtless to thinking about food in a hurry.

I’m gonna need a minute.

W. On to the sweet 16……again.

Coach Sampson liked it.

That Davis kid from Wisconsin and Banchero for Duke are special kinds of players. Both lottery picks too.

Yep. Watch Jabari Smith Jr for Auburn later. And Ivey for Purdue.

Banchero was consensus #1/2 along with Holmgren before the season started.

I hate Notre Dame sports of any kind but mostly just their men’s teams. Wreck 'em!
