The Vince Lombardi HBO documentary described very well how long Lombardi savored a victory.
After home games he would host a party. Following wins he would be an effusive, jovial host. Then sometime before the guests would start milling out he would become quiet and withdrawn as he began contemplating the next game.
Later in life he said he regretted his most famous quote (“winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing”). It wasn’t the winning that drove him. It was the drive that drove him. A feedback loop most competitors have.
