Speed, Speed/Movement, and Vertical Break vs Horizontal Break
To expand a bit, nobody really throws forkballs anymore because itâs basically a change up that is less effective.
Whether you throw a cutter or 2seam depends on who you are facing. A righty wouldnât want to throw 2seamers vs leftyâs and would more likely opt for a cutter to âbear inâ on leftyâs, ditto for that same righty throwing 2seamers to rightyâs.
LHPs very rarely throw sweepers because sweepers are not effective vs opposite handedness, they almost always opt for sliders because the downward tilt is better against rightyâs than the east/west sweeper.

Efficacy aside, seeing a true forkball grip always blows my (small-handed and stubby-fingered) mind.

The Frank Viola circle-change was my favorite grip to try and emulate back in the day.

Iâm watching the Yankees and Blue Jays right now, and the Yankees are playing comically poor defense. They have four official errors, and several plays that were errors in all but name. They look like a beer-league team. Boone got thrown out after Volpe struck out looking, but I suspect he was just looking for an excuse to stop watching the shitshow.

While speaking to reporters after the game, Boone declared that the Yankees are âa very good defensive teamâ despite embarrassingly committing four errors in three innings in Wednesdayâs loss. He said he feels the team simply had poor showings in its two series in Toronto.
I guess he and I have different standards.
FWIW - Verlander went 5 innings last night and got his first win to improve his record to 1-8 his ERA is 4.70.

I canât believe this, but apparently the Astros are averaging over 5 runs per game in July??
5.30 runs per game since June 28th (the first day after Pena went out on the IL. Take away the two Astros slobbaknockas, the 18-run Dodger game and the 11-run game in Seattle, and itâs ânormalizedâ to 4.13 runs per game. League average is 4.39 runs per game.

However, you expect a good team to win some slobberknockers. Comparing the median, rather than the average, Astros scores with other teams median is probably fairer, but I canât find that anywhere.
