Cal Raleigh hit 2 HRs today, giving him 29, which passes Johnny Bench as most pre-ASB HRs by a catcher.

For a second there I thought this was going to be a weird, overly specific stat that there’d be no logical reason to track. WHEW!

Would it help if I put “Fun Fact” in front of it?

That would just be false advertising.

This was also the third time he’s hit two home runs in a day game on a Friday, tying the mark held by nine others, though Raleigh is only the second one from North Carolina and the first who also has two or more sisters. It was an historic feat.

It is 100% pure, unadulterated, Baseball Miscellany though.

And the first with a sister that’s also a catcher.

29 homers for a catcher in an entire season is pretty darn good.

Fewest games needed to reach 20HR/20SB in a season:

Eric Davis, 46 ('87)
Jose Canseco, 68 ('98)
Tatis Jr, 71 ('21)
Ken Williams, 73 (1922)
Pete Crow-Armstrong, 73 (yesterday)

I thought Eric Davis was going to be the next megastar. I’m still not sure what happened there.

It’s interesting to me anytime I hear about somebody doing something that hasn’t been done since a HOF legend did it 50+ years ago.

Plus Johnny Bench was my dad’s favorite player back then, I had no idea he held that “record”, so that piqued my interest.

Same, and I have no idea what happened either. I remember him destroying the Astros on many several occasions.

Eric the Destroyer

ETA:

I guess it was Eric the Red.

Either way I thought he was a beast early on.

Maybe all that movement with his hands caught up to him

Injuries struck him just as he was entering his peak, then when he finally restarted his career…boom…colon cancer. Just one of those “what ifs”.

Fuck cancer, I had forgotten about that.

He and Will Clark were 2 guys I should have hated but just never could.

Clark always seemed like a good bloke. And he had one of the all time great Rickey Henderson stories.

And that sweet swing.
