Apparently, it’s not only Astros’ games where Hudson is a few minutes ahead of us common people.

Another endorsement for the miniseries (and that book).

I have not read that book, but I’ve been meaning to, along with other of Sobel’s works. “Galileo’s Daughter” is another of hers that is said to be outstanding.

So Sam West is once again cast as a sniveling shitweasel. Poor lad has a face for it, but he was one of my cadets at Alleyn’s and was a decent kid.

Fun Fact: His mum is Prunella Scales who played Sybil Fawlty.

He’s been great in everything I’ve seen him in.

He plays the part well, but I’ve never seen him as anything other than said sniveling shitweasel.

He was in “Notting Hill”, and was the bitchy actor who caused the open mic misunderstanding on the set of the Henry James movie.

He does have a strong theatre resume too, so hopefully he isn’t stuck playing the likes of Malvolio.

Prior to the marine chronometer, pretty much all clocks relied on a pendulum as the harmonic oscillator to regulate time. They can be very reliable and accurate when kept level and stable. Move them around, however, and all hell breaks loose. It was the pursuit of a marine timepiece to determine longitude that led to the development of the balance wheel and spiral spring, which is unaffected by orientation. This not only solved the longitude problem, but ultimately allowed for pocket and wrist watches, and remains the principle for all mechanical watches, even to this day.

What about WiFi 7?

John Harrison deserves way more recognition than he gets.

What longtime scientific conundrum did that solve? And like a quartz watch, when the power goes out, you’re screwed.

I found my dad’s old watch going thru his things.

Instead of winding it you would have to shake it everything so often.

He hadn’t worn it in a few decades but after a few shakes it was running.

I believe the rule is that you have to carry it in your ass now.

You can still wind it by hand. But yeah, that’s an automatic watch. As long as you keep moving, it winds itself.

It’s his birthright

Any more than two shakes and you’re just playing with it.

That goes for watches, right?
Asking for a friend.

That’s mighty cool you found that!
I’d love to see a pic of it- I’m a bit of a watch guy and have a good Seiko Prospex Turtle collection now.
My Captain upgrade present to myself is a Omega Speedmaster 3578.51.00 “Eyes on the Stars” Snoopy watch. They didn’t make many back in 2003. I’ve been fascinated by the Omega Speedmaster getting the nod as the watch NASA issued to the Apollo astronauts and that Snoopy was the “safety mascot” for the latter Apollo missions. The fact that I’ve loved Snoopy (especially the WWI Flying Ace character) since I was a kid due to my Mom loving Snoopy didn’t hurt, so naturally I had to get the watch.

When I flew I was VFR only, and navigation was achieved by calculating time, distance and drift on a circular slide rule and plotting it with a clay pencil on a laminated map. Way points were affirmed by looking out the window.

Kids today don’t know how good they have it.

My dad was a navigator/bombardier in B17s in WWII, the guy who set in the plexiglas nose cone and got shot to hell. When he came out he vowed he’d never get in another plane. Late in life he flew to California for his grandson’s high school graduation, but other than that we never went anywhere he had to leave the ground.
