Astros @ Rainjizz - 6/15 (thanks, Sphinx)

Yep. I know. Part of the game. I just thought it was interesting.

I just watched the whole inning again. It was baseball gold. The on-the-field action was compelling but Kalas and Blum did such a great job of covering the unfolding drama, punctuated by Kalas saying, “Phil Maton is thrilled as he walks off the mound” as he does so with no emotion whatsoever. Excellent. It’s worth watching the dugout reaction as well.

Like 50 of them have been in the last 10 years. It used to be REALLY rare.

Great review of the final pitch on each of Garcia’s 9 K’s. Pitching to the opponent’s weaknesses. Look at this image and consider that Garcia had no BB’s on the day. Anyone that suggests that Maldonado, calling the game, is not one of the MVP’s of this team is not paying attention. Credit to Garcia for executing, of course.

ITYM Garcia. But yeah, Maldonado is, as he was last year, a key component of the team’s success.

Massive fail. I suck.

Here’s the list by game and by decade:

Interesting history, especially about the guys who have done it more than once.

Sloppy Thurston is one of my new favorite pitchers.

The last time a pitcher had an immaculate inning against the Astros it was Garrett Richards of the Angels on June 4, 2014. But he did it against, Jon Singleton, Matt Dominguez, and Chris Carter… not that impressive.

Throwing 9 straight strikes to strike out three major league hitters with no ball put in play is impressive in my book no matter who the hitters are.

Of course. Some more than others.

Sometimes we get spoiled by watching greatness but even the 26th guy on the bench - the Robel Garcia’s if you will- are among the top 1% of players in the world.

It’s VERY impressive even if Maton didn’t act like it walking off the mound.
