What the hell was the name of the cafeteria near my house when I was a kid? Wyatt’s, that’s it. I do not come from a family with much enthusiasm for cafeterias, but my redneck cousins went all the time and I assume still do.

The Piccadilly on Congress was a good one, but it has been gone for decades.
As has Wyatt’s.
Young 6 year old me thought Piccadilly had the best hush puppies in the world.
I remember Wyatt’s a bit.
The Bon Ton in La Grange and the Oakridge Smokehouse in Schulenberg were outside of town, halfway to the Hill Country

And for the record, I always liked the fried fish LuAnn platter they had on Fridays, even though I’m not Catholic.
Those were the days.
And breakfast at Cattleman’s in Alleyton (just east of Columbus) included the best homemade Czech-style sausage patties anywhere.

It was the go-to place after Sunday church. My sister and I could have ONE starch, potatoes or macaroni and cheese, not both.

Fried fish or the chopped steak for me.
The strawberry shortcake drenched in high viscosity red syrup or the chocolate pie with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles.
Damn.
Now I’m hungry. And it’s almost bedtime.
