Astros go in order in the first

After two quick outs, Gusto with a BB, BB, and HBP. Inning finally ends with a slow chopper to 3B.

No score after one

I think he had Reynolds struck out too on the check swing (on the pitch not the swing) but I’m not the ump

Yeah, that should have been strike three. But he can’t melt down like that over a borderline call.

Caratini with a 2-out double

Jake grounds out to end the Astros’ second. No score

I remember Brian Reynolds being a guy I’d have loved the Stros to trade for…oh well

Peña with a blue star play!

Pirates challenging lay at 1B…pretty close…really close…overturned. Infield hit for Pham

Double puts Pirates at 2B and 3B

IKF grounds out 6-3, Pham scores

Cruz with an infield single. Rodriguez to 3B

Cruz easily swipes 2B

Cruz vs Astros battery is a massive mismatch

Cruz doesn’t seem to have a weakness. Maybe plate discipline?

Reynolds down on strikes to end the inning

But a couple of soft contact infield hits bites Gusto. 2-0 Pirates.

the inability to make contact is the only real red-flag on him: 180 K in 600 PA last season

He swings right through a lot of pitches in the zone. Doesn’t chase that much, walks a lot, but it seems like once he’s decided he should swing, he’s just going all-out for damage rather than contact. And boy does he do damage when he connects.

He’s struck out 75 times in 53 games. He makes Jose Altuve look downright selective.
