This is as good a time as any to comment on Up On Cripple Creek. It’s one of those songs that no one else can play like they do. I understand the beat just fine, I understand the bass line, the organ parts, etc. I don’t understand the groove. It’s got this crazy warped quality to it that I can’t imagine anyone else could duplicate. In my relatively extensive experience with live music, to my recollection, no one has had the temerity to try. I’ll tell you another band you’d do well to avoid trying to cover and for similar reasons, and that’s NRBQ. You go and try to duplicate their groove and you get right back to me on that.
