I don’t have an opinion on the degree of shittiness regarding Buffalo but I have spent a couple of summers in Western NY, particularly the Chautauqua Lake area, and it was not the least bit shitty. July there was a nice break from Texas.

I’ve only been on the Canadian side of that part of the world. Certainly very pleasant country apart from the chintzy part of Niagara.
No idea how Buffalo is as a town, but my bias is that the worst parts of North America are the cities.

I read somewhere that downtown Buffalo has spectacular late 19th-century architecture, and that they’re doing a pretty good job of preserving it.

We stopped at several wineries on our way from Toronto to the falls.
I know Jack squat about wine but I enjoyed it and to a person the wine people (wine-o’s?) were very nice.
