I watched it when you posted it is a couple of weeks ago.
I was a vegetarian for 4 years but it was more about not wanting to eat anything with a face and being in love with a vegetarian who was also a marvelous cook… I love eating meat but any guilt I have from it is not about the water usage. It’s the knowledge that “they” killed it to make money but when it died and became a product that I purchased I became a part of its murder. I don’t like murdering animals. That is the reason I don’t hunt. I’m not judging hunters, it’s just me. And while I could easily get by without meat, I currently need a lot of protein in my diet and meat is an excellent source. However, I will not eat beef, poultry, or pork from California. Even though it takes an ocean of water, fish should be okay. Just have to limit fish intake, that mercury thing.
Also. if it’s yellow, I could let it mellow, But, if it’s brown, I must lush it down.
I am almost vegan and I used to be a half-decent cooker of vegan meals when married. I have lost that urge since being single, so I am"almost" vegan because some of the frozen dinners I eat have cheese on them and you really cannot trust the labeling of food anyway.
The thing is, meat is only affordable as an every meal option because neither the cost of water input nor the cost of treating the liquid/solid/gaseous output from livestock is included in the price. That cost is socialized while the profits are privatized.
If the true cost of raising cattle was included in the price per lb, it would be a luxury. There’s a reason why killing the fatted calf upon the return of the prodigal son was such a big deal; it’s because it was the, not a, fatted calf. They didn’t have animals for eating just lying around, they had one and they saved it for special occasions.
Eating less meat is the drastic lifestyle change that is needed. Unfortunately, I simply cannot see how that happens in any timeframe that will stave off climate disaster.
And let’s not lose sight of the fact that climate change is not destroying the planet. It’s making it unlivable for us, but the planet will do just fine without us. The speed at which nature returned in our absence during the pandemic is proof of this.
In a billion years or so, the then dominant species on this planet will be unearthing relics from the era of Homo Sapiens and arguing about exactly how we fucked ourselves into oblivion.
I banged out fatigued for my last leg of my 4 day trip this morning. I was supposed to fly Hobby-LAX and be done. I was exhausted and something told me to call it a day knowing how bad things were in LAX. My other LAX SWA buddies have been telling me the winds in SoCal the past few days have been gnarly to put it mildly- lots of flights having to go around due to winds, lots of diverts, etc.; just a mess of things.
When we left Ontario yesterday bright and early, it was incredibly ‘sporty’ after takeoff simply climbing up a couple of thousand feet.
I’m blown away (no pun intended) at how bad these Santa Anas are in SoCal and how devastating this fire is. I have friends who’ve had to evacuate and some who have lost their homes.
If only California had raked more like donnie said several years ago.
Kindly keep SoCal in ya’ll’s thoughts, prayers, etc.
In some ways, I really hope Trump makes Canada the 51st state. Because it’s bigger and more populous than California, so that’s 2 Senators, 40+ House Reps and about 50 electoral college votes that will go to the Democrats.
Fires are well north of me so far. Even with “year 'round” fire season, this is very unusual in January. Humidity is under 20% everywhere, some places well under. Ignition is easy under those conditions and high Santa Ana winds make it the conflagration we see.
If you’re wondering why all the nonsense about Greenland, the Panama Canal and Canada…
They have no clue how to lower grocery prices and are walking back their entire campaign before even taking office. The press will spend the next four years chasing every coked up rabbit that Trump releases into the wild, and “forget” to report on the shit he’s actually doing and actually not doing.
I’m exhausted already and I’ve been doing my best to stay out of his river of shit.
Obama and Trump ar sitting next to each other at Carter’s funeral. They seem to be having quite an animated conversation. Would love to hear that chat.
This is a classic example of a easy untrue headline driving the narrative:
That assertion is wrong. The city was in the process of negotiating a new contract with the fire department at the time the budget was being crafted, so additional funding for the department was set aside in a separate fund until that deal was finalized in November. In fact, the city’s fire budget increased more than $50 million year-over-year compared to the last budget cycle, according to Blumenfield’s office, although overall concerns about the department’s staffing level have persisted for a number of years.
The NY appeals process is over with a collective “Nuts!” from the courts. SCOTUS is all Trump has left now. As I understand it, it’s up to Sotomayor as to whether to grant emergency relief.
It’s considerably more murky and ill-defined as seen in a very active thread in BlueSky regarding a Chris Hayes Politico factcheck. Also, Kevin Drum highlights Musk’s spreading of lies about the fires in X at Elon Musk is the new emperor of misinformation – Kevin Drum .
