The shell casings had “deny”, “defend” and “depose” written on them.

ETA: much has been made of the stealth tactics used by the killer, but he did that because writing “LibertĂ©, ÉgalitĂ©, FraternitĂ©â€ on a guillotine and wheeling it along the street would be too conspicuous. Even in New York.
