I’d like to think that too, but they’ve shown time and time again that they will simply follow Trump’s orders, no matter how much they have to humiliate themselves or abdicate their Constitutional responsibilities. I will be absolutely shocked if Gaetz isn’t relatively easily confirmed.
This is the point. He’s appointing people to head the very agencies who they see as their enemies. Gaetz will get to end the investigation of him, Gabbard will get her name off the terrorist watch list, Musk will get those pesky regulations out of his checking account’s way…This is exactly how you do it.
By resigning when he did - 2 days before the House was set to vote on whether to publish the results of its ethics investigation into him - he ended that ethics investigation. That report will now be buried.
Here’s a leader of the “Uncommitted” movement absolutely freaking the fuck out of Trump’s appointment of Mike “there’s no such thing as a Palestinian” Huckabee as Ambassador to Israel, and demanding that Biden do something.
This guy fucked around but the people who are about to find out are those in Gaza and the West Bank who are about to be bulldozed into the sea.
Right, but he probably wouldn’t have resigned without being nominated for a cabinet position, so this was sort of the vehicle for that, one way or another. I’m certain the report, or at least parts, will leak, and equally certain he will claim it is fake news.
Congress abdicated its Constitutional authority a few decades ago. There is a whole generation of Congresspersons who totally believe the Legislative branch is subservient to the Executive branch.
Exactly. The majority packages the Executive’s wishlist in enormous omnibus bills with enough line-item pork to coerce everyone to vote for it, and the minority wins political points by whining without ever having to take responsibility. And all of them (or at least most) get to stay in the club and enrich themselves. This is the key problem - not Trump, Biden, Harris, Clinton, or whoever else is taking orders from the various real power brokers
Most of those who popped off yesterday have already retracted. Tuberville actually said today “it’s not our job to question the President’s cabinet nominees” and threatened any Senator who votes against him with expulsion (not sure how he is planning that). Others are backtracking furiously on criticizing Gaetz. They all got a strong talking to. There will be no fight.
