Well, if history has taught us anything it’s that government violence against its unhappy citizens always works out well for those in charge.
If the Democrats had any brains they’d be putting together the message for the working class that as soon as the going got the slightest bit tough the rich class complained and the “deport the job-stealing immigrants” plan was immediately ditched.
Yeah, I’m not holding my breath.
Nobody is going to show up for the parade, and the counter-protests are going to be massive. They will cancel this thing even if there is nary a cloud in the sky.
Good people on both sides of the collective.
I read somewhere this morning that Lewandowski actually was trying to stop them from dragging Padilla away, which seems unlikely to say the least, but maybe for some of these fuckwits there actually is a bottom?
I will not stand for Seven of Nine erasure.
I’m not too sure about ICE pulling back on its raids, at least not here in California. Yesterday, the winery’s labor attorneys reported raids in four different counties in the last two days with “continuing activity” in another. The Department of Labor made the rounds yesterday here in Napa visiting all of the H2A visa providers.
I was also on a Zoom meeting organized by UC Davis for folks in the Ag Industry about to what to do in the event ICE shows up at a work site - e.g. the difference between a Judicial and Administrative warrant, who’s authorized to allow agents access to private property, etc. Davis is scheduling another meeting for today because they didn’t have capacity for everyone who registered for the first meeting. I also have another Zoom scheduled with our attorneys next week (along with many of their other clients) to go over much of this same ground in more detail.
One bright spot is that in California the legislature passed SB 54 in 2018 which limits the extent to which local and state law enforcement can assist federal immigration enforcement (the major exception being if the person of interest has a criminal record).
Trump tweeted it and talked about it on TV, but if that’s all he did - which is quite likely - then everything will continue.
According WaPo this morning, despite Trump’s social media claims, there is no anticipated change in deportation policy. Think we’re about to find out who has more sway, the mega donors or the rabid maga base.
Do we know that Big Farmer called up Trump to stop the raids? He might have just been trying to negate a flashpoint for protestors prior to his Small Disk Weekend Extravaganza.
I’m so, so glad my ranch buddy decided to retire and move back to Mexico a few years ago.
I need to call him one of these days soon.
No one was mentioned specifically. According to the article, various folks in the industry (as well as a few conservative “influencers”) have made their case to the administration. Agriculture Secretary Rollins also allegedly favors some type of relief for farmers. Personally, I think it’s just public posturing. I’ll believe there’s a change of heart about raiding farms, vineyards, et al when I see that actually happen.
I’ve heard from family in Santa Ana that the very rough stops in public seem random as they’ve stopped American citizens who then have to fight to get the ICE douche bags to let them show proof of citizenship.
Sadly, not at all surprised to hear that. This is ugly and I fear will become even uglier very soon.
I’d like to think that the ICE people making these stops are doing so reluctantly and just following orders, but each day brings more evidence that they’re actually thugs who enjoy this.
ICE is rife with Proud Boys and pardoned Jan 6 rioters.
And I’d like to think that my wife will bring home Natalie Portman for a week long threesome, but these seem equally likely.
…and police departments, and the military
I’d hope citizens who feel at risk know how in-vehicle cameras work and are recording any interaction they have…cops are supposed to have body cams but it’s amazing how often the get “turned off” or “malfunction”
Limey will be in his bunk
