Great story about the Mazeroski home run ball that ended the 1960 World Series. A local kid retrieved the ball from the park outside the LF wall at Forbes Field. He returned it to the clubhouse with the intent of giving it to Mazeroski, but Maz just signed the ball and told the kid to keep it. The next summer, the kid was playing a sandlot game with some friends using the ball. The ball was hit into a high thicket of brush and was never found. It’s estimated it would be worth we worth well over $1 million today.

I was a stupid kid too. My grandfather got me a ball signed by Ted Williams. I kept it on my bookcase until one day we needed a ball to play catch. I regret that so much and don’t even remember what ever became of that ball. I was probably 9 or 10.
I would have liked to have seen a game at Forbes Field. Crosley Field too.

Suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound

Did you ever ask the junk yard neighbor next to your ball field?

Maybe I’m the only one who noticed, and maybe I’m the only one who cares, but salsa giant Willie Colón died a few days ago. Unfortunately (fortunately) he was also a Trump loving fuckface, so I’m not really able to mourn his death. As I’ve said elsewhere in similar context, if that diminishes me as a human, que sea así, ahuevao, chucha.

Bueno, this idiot was the organizing force behind an insane amount of great music, backing and sort of playing the role of music director before that was a thing for greats like Rubén Blades :panama: and Héctor Lavoe who was, I have to admit, the single greatest salsa vocalist of all time, at least the greatest male salsa vocalist.

My favorite singers are guys like Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed, but you’d have to be a total moron not to recognize the stunning greatness of HĂ©ctor Lavoe. Like many greats, he died idiotically young. I’ve strayed from the initial impulse, discussing the death of someone who, later in life, in my view, merited scorn. In death he, again, in my view, merits ambivalence.

Had he not been supplicant to one of the worst people in history, I might have advocated a statue on top of the Freedom Tower. But no. So fuck that delusional motherfucker. One fewer Trump voter.

Innyhoo. Here’s a nice video of an outSTANding song. I have no idea what year this happened. If anyone can figure it out.

I don’t really understand why Venezuelans are thought not to want to dance. That is inconsistent with my experience:

Oye, tu sentado allĂĄ, parece venezolano
Ven aquĂ, vamo a bailal, que todos somos hermanos
Lo bailan en Venezuela, lo bailan en PanamĂĄ
Este ritmo es africano y donde quiera va a acabal

Interesting that your favorite singers employee a Sprechstimme style vocal approach.

I saw this quote by Rubén Blades:
“Regarding our personal differences, I’ll say that these exist and will continue to exist in every type of relationship,” Blades wrote, adding, “I will always feel affection for Willie, even though I don’t understand why he decided to sue me.” He also called out Colón’s social media presence later in life, which included many MAGA talking points and pro-Trump posts. “And although his support and sympathy for the most deceitful, narcissistic, and racist politician the United States has ever seen also bothered me, none of this affects the reality of what we managed to create musically, nor does it erase or cancel my affection for him, the positive memories, the laughter, the struggles, triumphs, difficulties, and sacrifices we shared,” Blades said.

Robert Carradine, 71, by suicide.

Carradine, youngest son of famed actor John Carradine, may be best remembered as Louis Skolnick from Revenge of the Nerds among other things.

I like singers whose singing ability isn’t such that they can ignore the quality of the song altogether. I usually prefer people who have not great voices to people that have great voices, because the not great vocalists are more likely in my experience to be singing great songs. There are exceptions, of course. There’s no artist I like more than David Bowie, and not only was he an all time great songwriter, he was a massively talented vocalist. And the two guys I mentioned, RubĂ©n and HĂ©ctor, I love both of those guys, and you’d be hard pressed to find better vocalists than either one of them.

Rubén put a good voice to the way I try to approach things with folks who embrace Trumpism or fail to repudiate it.

Aw shit. Augie passed on the 7th. He was a legend. The master of the Vox Continental organ. The last of the Texas Tornados.

“Augie’s my man. He’s like an intellectual who goes fishing using bookworms. Seriously though, he’s the shining example of a musician, Vox player or otherwise, who can break the code. His playing speaks volumes. Speaks in tongue actually. He can bring a song, certainly any one of mine, into the real world.

“I’ve loved his playing going all the way back to the Sir Doug days when he was featured and dominant. What makes him so great is that internally speaking, he’s the master of syncopation and timing. And this is something that cannot be taught. If you need someone to get you through the shipping lanes and there’s no detours, Augie will get you right straight through
.Augie’s your man.” - Bob Dylan
